本書上巻の帯には「超野心的ホラー小説最終形!」という惹句があるけれども、ホラー風味はプロローグの部分だけで、骨格としては完全にSFのジャンルだろう。
鈴木光司の代表作である「リング」は純粋ホラーだったが、オカルトのまま終わらせるのに著者が納得いかなかったものか、「らせん」になって無理矢理科学的な説明付けをしようとこねくり回し、「ループ」に至っては遂にバーチャルな世界に行ってしまい、物語が破綻してしまったと思う。本作の場合、これ一本で「リング」シリーズを一巡しているなというのが、読後の率直な印象だった。
アイデアはいい。エピローグのどんでんの返し方も、意表を付いている。でもSFというにはストーリーテリングが今ひとつで、とても星5つは出せないな。結局科学的な素材を説明するのに汲々として登場人物を魅力的に描けていないのが敗因じゃないだろうか? ネタパラシになってしまうので、抽象的な書き方しかできずにもどかしいけれども(内容はレビューのタイトルに尽きる)、決して傑作と呼べるような作品ではない。「リング」を初めて読んだときの驚きは、遠い過去になってしまった。

鈴木光司久々のホラーということで、手に取りました。父親失踪という傷を持つ主人公が、失踪事件を追ううちに大きな異変に築き巻き込まれてゆく。天文学、数学、物理学、古代史など十分に調査した上で構築される物語は、リアリティがあり、ひきこまれましたが、父親失踪の秘密と、エンディングがしょぼくって、がっかりしました。結局、転生ものですか？大金払って、買って読む代物ではありません。図書館で借りて、読む程度の本でした。

ループを読んで受け入れられた人なら楽しむことができると思います。
ホラーにしか興味がない人は読まない方がいいです。自分は最後まで楽しめました。
