本作がホラー小説大賞受賞作品だと聞いて期待しているホラー好きのみなさん、この作品はホラーではありません。
ホラーを意図しているけど全然怖くないとか、そういうことではなく、ホラー的要素がそもそ入っていない。特殊な家業を営む三兄弟の日常を描いたビルドゥングスロマン的な内容である。特殊な家業ゆえのグロい描写はあるがそれはそれ、グロではあってもホラーではない。
これから読もうとなさっているホラー好きな方は、その辺を考慮の上手に取られた方がいいでしょう。

「紗央里ちゃんの家」に次ぐ、ホラー小説大賞史上ワースト2の誕生となってしまった。「パラサイト・イヴ」や「黒い家」の、あの硬質なホラー小説大賞は何処へ消えた?そう、選考委員を詰問したくなる程、これは余りにも酷すぎる。
「遺工(死体加工業)」なるグロテスクな道具がデンと置かれているだけで、物語や登場人物自体には狂気や猟奇は微塵もない。だから、作品の批評以前に、そもそもこれがホラー小説なのか否かすら疑わしいわけだ。
ホラー小説大賞では、「お葬式」の様なユーモアホラーや、「夜市」の様なファンタジックホラーなど、多彩な作品が輩出されてきた。確かにホラーには定式などはないし、多種多様なホラーがあってよい。だが、オーソドックスなホラーでないのなら、それなりに読者を納得させられる補完的なホラー要素を描けるだけの技量が求められるのは必然である。
しかしながらこの作品は、しっかり者の長男、存在感の希薄な次男、罵詈雑言を吐きまくる三男という月並みな人間達の凡庸なドラマを、死体という忌避概念を使っておどろおどろしく糊塗しただけの産物に過ぎない。
印象に残ったのは、こいつはスカトロジストかと思うくらいに、やたら「糞」を連呼する三男への嫌悪感くらいだ。この作品を読了して得たものなど、それ以外には絶無である。
それよりも私は、この稀にみる駄作を、「理知」「感心」「さわやかな読後感」などと評している選考委員達にこそ、ホラーをも凌駕する不気味さを覚える。いい加減にこの人達は、自分達の用管窺天と、醜いアヒルをいくら持ち上げても白鳥になどはならないという事を学ぶべきだ。ホラー小説大賞は、そろそろ選考会を人心一新しなければ、その将来はなくなるだろう。

かつて黒い家や、ぼっけぇきょうてぇ等を生み出したホラー小説大賞
それだけに期待は大きく、「地図男」の時に感じたガッカリを挽回してくれるかと思いきや、
そうはなりませんでした。
この著者の発想には光る物を時折感じますが、書き急ぎすぎるところがあるようで、もっと書き込んで欲しいなと思うがままに別のキャラの話になります。
グロシーンは多いですが、内容はかなりアッサリ。
中途半端に受けと人情噺を狙っているところが興ざめ。
もっと著者が真に書きたいものを表現して欲しかった。
暴力のシーンがかなり不快だったので☆２つのところをマイナス１．
