下巻での、大きなトピックスは、信長の残虐性、光秀の信長に対する憎悪、秀吉の天運、
そして、何より、世の無常だ。

光秀が、信長に対して、憎悪を深めてゆく様が、克明に描かれている。
そこでは、多くの資料を駆使し、中国大返しの謎にも迫っている。

また、教養面では、圧倒的に秀吉をしのぐ光秀であるが、
それが、根底から、突き崩されると感じる下りがあり、
大変興味深いし、これぞ、真の下克上だ。

最後は、本能寺の変へと、突き進む。

相変わらず、信長の残虐性には、開いた口が塞がらない。
非戦闘員である女子供まで、容赦無く、大量虐殺するが、忠臣秀吉でさへ、嫌悪感を感じる様になる。
随風に至っては、信長は阿修羅か、と評す。

それにしても、歴史上、秀吉程の、天運を備えた人物は、珍しいのではないか。
秀吉の決断、および、行動のすべてが「当たり」なのだ。

しかし、印象的な下りがある。
天海が秀吉を評して、旭日そのものの秀吉が、いつか落日となる、と呟く。

かように、本書の、戦乱の世では、無常を強く感じさせる。
さらに、激動の昭和史、平成史もまた、無常である事にも、想いを馳せた。

作者が20年来書きたかった、という想いが現れた小説だと思いました。今までの小説とは登場人物それぞれの心の動きの描写が新鮮でした。秀吉と光秀は対照的な性格に描かれており、人間は自らの性格を超越することはできないようです。史実はともかく自分の人生を振り返ることのできる小説でした。日本経済新聞に連載された、ということが分かるような気がします。
「人生五十年、下天の内をくらぶれば・・・・・」ということですね。兎に角面白く、一気に読んでしまいました。

秀吉の出自に対する新しい説を基にしたその前半生と、信長の政策をめぐって光秀が本能寺へと追い詰められていくあたりが白眉。
もちろん小説なのだし、本当のところは今となっては誰にも分からないのですが、この二人の残された動静を見ていると、その心模様は本書の通りであったとしか思えなくなります。
私もいつの間にか司馬遼太郎の創作を史実と思い込んでいたところがありますから。
小説の力というのはある意味で恐ろしくもありますね。
