池澤夏樹の初期の作品、「スティルライフ」が一番好き。透明感、浮遊感など。しかし、その後、エッセイや評論が増えてきて、なんだか、初期の感じがなくなってきたと思っていた。
今回の作品で、また、「スティルライフ」の頃の雰囲気が見られて、嬉しかった。空気感が全く同じ、というわけではないのは、この人が成熟していったからだろうと思う。だから、初期の作品のファンには、お勧め。

２篇収録。おすすめです。ちょっと甘めかもしれないが星５つ。
特に修道院の出来が良かったから。

「星に降る雪」
雪の神岡にある、ニュートリノ望遠鏡を有する地下天文台で働く田村は、かつて雪山で友・新庄を失った。
６人のパーティは雪崩の遭い、新庄のみ命を失った。
同行していたが生き残った新庄の彼女・亜矢子（恋人というには期間が……）が田村を訪ねてくるところから物語は始まる。

生と死のはざまを垣間見てしまった二人は、それぞれ微妙に異なるが抱えた心の闇を解放できずにいる。
それは見てしまったものにしかわからない、禁忌に触れたものにしか理解できない領域の「闇」かもしれない。
田村のココロが解放されるのはいつのことか？　我々の魂も物語と一緒に旅をする……。

「修道院」
オフをクレタ島で過ごす「私」が出遭った修道院。
土地の老女が語る５０年前の物語。
罪を背負った男の贖罪の日々に、そもそものきっかけとなった美しい女が村に現れ更なる悲劇を生む。
ミステリアスなストーリイ展開と、グイグイと物語に惹きこんでいく池澤の文章が素晴らしい。
寝食を忘れて一気に読ませるだけの力が宿っている。さすが芥川賞作家！

物語の雰囲気は、浦沢直樹の「マスターキートン」や「パイナップル・アーミー」に出てくるエピソードのような感じがある。
登場人物たちの造形がしっかりしており、それぞれの心の闇は深い。
久しぶりに内容の充実した作品を読むことができた喜びに満足！！

小編一編、中編一編。どちらも、人智の及ばぬものについての物語。
「星に降る雪」は日本の話。
神岡でニュートリノの測定の仕事をしている男が、
雪崩で死んだ友人から何を教えてもらい、何を目指しているのかを友人の元彼女に話す話。
男と、元彼女との人生への向かい方の違いが鮮明。
自分は男の方の考え方が好き。
どんな考え方か、一方、元彼女はどんな考え方なのか、
それは、それこそ読んで感じて下さい。
･･･このあと、この男の人がどうしたのかなぁ。

「修道院」は、なんだか説話を聞いている気分になってきます。
こっちはクレタ島とアレキサンドリアの話。
ふらりと村に住み着いた男が、一人で荒れた修道院を修繕する。
それには理由があって･･･という話。
しっかりオチがついてます。
語り手の「私」が宿の女性に目をしっかりと向けているのが、最後まで読んだとき、
とてもいい読後感を与えてくれました。自分もこの人いいなぁって思いましたよ。

どっちも出だしに少し戸惑うのですが
（名前が多く出てきたり、「私」という人称に慣れなかったり）、
話が転がり出すとめくる手が止まりませんでした。
