万城目 学
1976年大阪府出身。京都大学法学部卒。2006年、『鴨川ホルモー』で第4回ボイルドエッグズ新人賞を受賞しデビュー。同書は「本の雑誌」エンターテインメント1位、「王様のブランチ」新人賞、本屋大賞6位など読書界の話題を席巻した。第2作『鹿男あをによし』は直木賞候補に(本データはこの書籍が刊行された当時に掲載されていたものです)

　ホルモーをめぐる六話のオムニバスである。第一話の小ホルモーで、その内容を描写しているので、本作だけでも問題はない。といっても、前作を読んでおくと、何倍も楽しめる。
　「べろぺろばあ」店長の安倍氏が京大生だったころのことや懐中時計の由来、芦屋の三角関係や楠木が凡ちゃん頭に別れを告げるに至った胸キュンエピソードなどが語られる。高村のチョンマゲまで、一発ギャグではなく400年越しの恋に昇華されてしまうのだあ！
　「鴨川…」が、恋愛を調味料に使ったギャグ小説だったのに対し、本作はホルモーという大仕掛けのギャグをスパイスにした恋愛小説である。
　それにしても万城目さん、男の恋を描くときはギャグに走るのに、「同志社大学黄竜陣」といい「長持の恋」といい、女性を視点人物にして恋心を描くと、しっとり哀感にじむ格調高い表現になるのはなぜ？おっと「もっちゃん」があったか。

『鴨川ホルモー』の続編と思い込み読み始めましたが、ホルモーに関わる人々の恋の物語でした。前編をはじめ、色々なところに伏線が張られていて、「やられたな〜、そういうことか〜」という感じ。作者の頭の中を覗いてみたくなりました。『長持ちの恋』を読んだ後は胸がいっぱいになり涙が出たほど。読後ものすごく余韻が残る作品だと思います。

『鴨川ホルモー』を読んでおけば断然楽しめる。
『鴨川ホルモー』のエピソードとのつながりや、この本の中での各章のつながりがなかなか憎い。
第三景「もっちゃん」、第六景「長持の恋」は特に秀逸と感じた。
「もっちゃん」は、巧みなからくり装置の中に迷い込んだような、時空の旅。
「長持の恋」はちょっとほろりとくる。
「もっちゃん」で謎のまま終わった小ネタの真相が、他の章で暗示されているのも面白い。
