終戦後の東京、戦犯収容所を舞台にした小説、というと何やら説教くさい、非エンタテインメントなものを想像するが、決してそうではない。
緻密に練り上げられたストーリーは非常にスリリングだ。装丁もいい。

時は、戦後まもなく。
舞台は、東京裁判にかけられる日本人戦犯が収容されているスガモプリズン。
行方不明者を探しに来たニュージーランド人将校が、
BC級戦犯のキジマと、プリズン内での兵士の死の謎を解く、とともに、
キジマが行ったとされる捕虜虐待の真相に迫ります。

まず、ミステリーとして抜群に面白い！
キジマの哲学的とも思える冴えわたる観察眼。ミスター・フェアフィールドの忌憚のない人柄。
一気に読み進めてしまいます。
そして、ラスト。
人間の獣性と狡猾さが滲み出る、
しかし、そこで自分を見つめる誠実さは痛いほど。
「戦争は人を狂わす」などと、第三者ぶって距離を置くことを許さない結末は、圧巻です。

とにかく面白かったです。
題材が題材だけに、占領軍による統治の仕方、それを受け入れる日本人の心理等も描かれることになりますが、読者の左〜右翼度に関わらず、広い層にとって納得のいく内容ではないかと思う、というか、みなさんの意見を聞いてみたいです。

読後１週間が経ちましたが、なんかまだ、戦後の空気の中に自分が漂い続けているかのような、不思議な気分。
おすすめ。
