　下巻では主人公が変わります。が、やってることは上巻と同じに見えてしまいます。なおかつ時間軸は引き継いでいるので、幼年期からはじまる上巻からすると平板な印象を受けるのも否定しがたい事実。戦闘描写なども、一少年兵からスタートする上巻に比べ、淡白な気がするのです。長距離トラックの運転手ということで、色々な展開を勝手に想像しちゃっていたので、なおのこと勿体無く思います。フェミニズムに関心を寄せるという打海さん、この上下巻の書き分けはまた別の意図があったことは読み取れます。が、純粋エンターテイメントとしては、まあ、個人的に上巻よりも落ちるかなあ、と。それとも、これは僕が男だから？
　あと、ガウリなどおいしいキャラクターを使い切ってないし、シリーズ化するつもりなんじゃないでしょうか。そうなってくると、この下巻の位置づけもわかりやすくなるかもしれませんね。

戦乱の日本という状況で、孤児となった子供たちがどうやって生き抜いていくのかが描かれている点は、上下巻通じて変わらないものの、主役の交代に伴い、月田姉妹のはじけたキャラクター性が圧倒的な存在となって最後まで突き進む展開に、上巻とは違った面白さを感じました。行方不明となった母親を最後まで気にかけた上巻のカイトのストレートさに対し、下巻では、姉妹の実父が率いる差別主義的な団体に対抗する姉妹のゲリラ的闘争が話の大筋ですが、ジェンダー、性的マイノリティーといった問題や聖書を引用したりと上巻よりは哲学的な印象を受けました。一見あっけらかんとしているようでいてその複雑な内面を時折見せてくれる姉妹の魅力にあふれています。結末は、悲哀があって美しく、彼ら彼女らのその後を読みたい気にさせます。映画化を希望します。

(上)で、どちらがしゃべっているのか分からない、とても存在感の強い双子姉妹が主人公のお話です。

最初から最後まで、ノンストップの彼女たちの活躍が楽しめます。

わたしがレビューを書いている時点で、

　(下)★★★★1/2☆
下巻の評価が若干落ちるのは、男性の読者が多いためかもしれません。

続編が楽しみですね。
