表紙と帯のインパクトで購入し読んだのですが、まったく面白くありませんでした…。
本を読まない人にはわかりやすくて、中高生にはウケがいいという意見が多いようですが、
私は普段まったく本を読まないし、この本を読んだときは高校１年のときです。
そのような方程式も当てはまらないんじゃないかなぁ、と思います。
山田さんは文章力はないが、奇抜な設定やイキオイが売り、とのようなことが言われていますが、
それさえも私には、バトルロワイヤルの延長としか思えず、独創性も感じることができませんでした。
確かに文章はすらすら読めましたが、それは、簡単な言い回し・感覚的な言い回しが多く、
考えなくても読んでいけるからではないかと思います。
本を読まない私が言うことでもないのですが、なぜこの作家が評価されているのかわかりません…。
今は大分成長してらっしゃるのでしょうか？

どうやら大ブームしているとかいう山田悠介。
物は試し、ということで読んでみた。

どうやらこの作家は、設定さえできれば小説は書ける、そう思っているらしい。
アイディアを膨らまそうとか、読者を引き付けるような文章を書こうとか、そういった努力が微塵も感じられない。

ストーリーは一本調子、キャラクターはありきたり、文字のくせに「棒読み」という印象を与える台詞回し、何もかもが薄っぺら。
楽しむべきポイントが設定以外に見当たらない。言い換えれば、裏表紙の煽り文以上の内容が無い。ラストではどうやら作者は読者を感動させたいのだろうな、ということはわかるのだが、それに応えてあげる気が全くしない。


しみじみと「活字離れ」というのはこういうことなんだな、と思うことしきり。
もともと活字離れをしている人間がひょいっとこんなもんを書き散らし、普段本など読まない人々が読んで(比較対象がないもんだから)面白がり、口コミで広まり、「本を読まない人でもベストセラー作家になれる」という意識が、読書歴の無い作者による粗悪小説が量産される原動力になる、そういう負のスパイラルを喚起している。

読書好き学生としては、「高校生など若者を中心にブレイクした山田悠介」といった文言を目にし耳にするたび、強い悲憤を感じざるを得ない。

ふらっと寄った本屋で何気なく手に取った本を買って
好みにあわずに買ったことをちょっと後悔することがたまにあります。
しかし、これほど読まなければ良かったと後悔した本は生まれて初めてです。

最後まで話が盛り上がるところがどこにもありません。
かなり早い段階で犯人のめぼしがつきます。
その上でどんなどんでん返しや意外な演出があるのだろうと思いながら
読み進めていたらそのまま終わってしまいました。
最初から最後まで何の工夫もひねりもないことに愕然としました。

しかも作者がこの作品を通して何を伝えたいのかさっぱりわかりません。
たぶん伝えたいことなど何もないのだと思いますが。

主人公、両親、クラスメイト、先生、各登場人物のキャラクターはどれも
今時これはないだろうというくらいものすごくありきたりのぺらぺらの設定で
まったく深みがありません。せめてもっと数を減らしてほしいと思います。

まあ、無駄に多いクラスメイトの誰が誰かわからなくなる点を除けば
単純でわかりやすい話です。
他の方のレビューにもあるとおり、小中学生や普段あまり本を読まない方には
読みやすい本ではないかとは思います。
