　「パッチワークガール。私は継ぎはぎ娘。」その文章に惹かれて買いました。
　先天性の病気から医師である父により体中いたる所にブタの臓器を移植された娘。私は人間なのかブタなのか。
　人はどこまでが人なのか。どこで境界線が引かれるのか。今後人間以外からの臓器移植が可能となれば起こりうる倫理的問題点をもとにした作品です。
　ゆっくりとそろそろと徐々に怖さがこみ上げてきます。著者の淡々とつづられてゆく文章がラストの驚きの結末までの怖さを持続させています。
　娘が唯一信じていたものが揺るがされた瞬間、彼女が感じた恐怖と絶望はきっと誰にも想像できない。
　「吸血狩り」も面白いです。男の言動が少年の幼い想像力をかきたて、少年は驚きの行動に出る。子どもの無垢な想像力と行動力を甘く見てはいけません。
　短編なので一気に読めます。一気に読んでください。

人と動物の境目を問う表題作のほか、8歳の少年が憧れの女性(従姉)を吸血鬼から守る為に戦う「吸血狩り」、読んだ者を狂気に陥れる「本」の2編が収録されている。個人的にもっとも印象に残ったのは「本」。どこまでが"本"の中身で、どこからがそうでないのか、その境目がわからない。「吸血狩り」も、あの男を吸血鬼とみなすか否かで物語の持つ意味合いが全く違ってくる。
小林泰三の書く物語は、読み返すたびに新たな発見があり、何度でも楽しめる作品が多い。この本に納められている三作も例外なくそうである。小林泰三作品を読んだことがある方もない方も、この本は是非一度手にとってみるべきだ。

　本当にレベルの高いホラーだと思う。自分が短編小説でここまで面白いと思えるのはこの著者と乙一だけだ。
　独特なグロテスクな描写と世界感。読んでいる間にもまるで狂気の世界に放り込まれたような眩暈感を常に感じる。
　表題作は人の存在と尊厳と狂気を融合させた傑作。吸血鬼も表面だけ見ればなんてことない作品だが、内部にはとてつもない悪意と狂気が描かれていて、しかも、読み手にきちっと伝わる形で書かれてある。
　そして、際立った完成度を誇るのが最後の短編の「本」。まぎれもない傑作。一度読もう。
