自然科学の分野でノーベル賞を受賞した１４名の日本人について、その業績にまつわる
エピソードと、その方のユーモラスな側面、そして受賞対象となった業績を図解で説明
していますが、結局あれやこれや的になってしまっているのか私には少し難しかったです。
この本は、理科系の方である程度知識をお持ちの方向けかなと思いました。

「本を作るのにあたって自分に課したのは、世間で流布しているようなノーベル賞学者のステレオタイプな逸話や通俗的なエピソードを集まるだけではつまらない、そうではなくノーベル賞学者の、目の前の事象に出会ったときしめす子供のような好奇心とか、アイディアや発想を生み出す遊び心とか、難しい理論や比ゆやたとえ話を交えて語るときのユーモアなど、一見たわいもないことをなるたけ多く、新たに発掘しようと思ったことである」。

湯川秀樹から下村修まで、物理・化学・医学生理学の３つの分野でノーベル賞を受賞した１３人を紹介している(小林・益川氏は２人で１章)。著者の狙いがどこまで成功したかどうかについてはともかく、業績をわかりやすく簡潔に説明している部分については良くまとまっている。特に、南部博士の受賞に至る素粒子科学の評価の流れとか、田中耕一氏の受賞後のヒーレンカンプ・カラス氏との妥当性の議論とか、下村博士が発見したGFPの利用が広がっていく様子とか、新書サイズなのでそれほど突っ込んだ詳しい内容ではないものの、ポイントをおさえて整理されていてわかりやすかった。

和書では科学技術系の読み物であっても時折軽視されてしまう参考文献のリストも、簡便な形ながらきちんと列挙してある。

湯川秀樹氏の受賞から、2008年度4名同時受賞までの自然科学部門歴代受賞者13名の略歴や研究業績内容を纏めた書である。これまで名前や対象研究の題しか知らず、また全ての受賞者を記憶に残すのは難しいが、本書はコンパクトに紹介してあり有用な1冊である。但し当然ながら物理・化学・生理学医学の研究であることから、簡単な紹介でもその内容についての理解は難しい。よって各文章の最終頁に図やイラストでのまとめ説明が付されているのは親切だ。各博士のエピソードや語録も組み入れられ、皆さんのお人柄がよくわかった。その中で最も面白かったのは江崎玲於奈博士だ。NM州のSanta Feでオペラ蝶々夫人を観た際の、その物語と日米関係を絡ませての解説話は面白い。各受賞者の出身大学は、京大が湯川・朝永・福井・利根川・野依各氏、東大が江崎・小柴・南部各氏、東工大が白川氏、東北大が田中氏、名大が小林氏・益川氏、長崎大が下村氏。以下一覧を備忘録として。1949年物理学・湯川秀樹氏、中間子の存在の予言。1965年物理学・朝永振一郎氏、量子電磁力学に関する研究。1973年物理学・江崎玲於奈氏、トンネル効果の発見と「エサキダイオード」の発明。1981年化学・福井謙一氏、「フロンティア軌道理論」を開拓。1987年生理学医学・利根川進氏、多様な抗体を生成する遺伝的原理の解明。2000年化学・白川英樹氏、誘電性高分子の発見と開発。2001年化学・野依良治氏、「不斉合成反応」技術の開拓。2002年物理学・小柴昌俊氏、宇宙ニュートリノの検出に対するパイオニア的貢献。2002年化学・田中耕一氏、たんぱく質構造解析の質量分析法の開発。2008年物理学・南部陽一郎氏、自発的対称性の破れの発見。2008年物理学・小林誠氏・益川敏英氏、六種類以上のクォークの存在の予言。2008年化学・下村脩氏、緑色蛍光たんぱく質の発見と開発にて受賞。
