現政権に迫害され絶滅寸前の先住民「山人」をめぐる柳田國男と兵頭北神。

山人に誘われたことを「選民のしるし」のように繰り返し自著の中で語っていた柳田。
軍国主義の風潮への迎合のために自説を捨てた柳田、国内・台湾での山人狩りに協力した柳田は、なお子供の頃に出会った山人を追い求める。

山人の父を持ち、柳田の山人殺しを黙認していた北神は、柳田に破門され学会から追放された後も、柳田の下っ端仕事を引き受ける。

両者とも不可解な過去を持ちながら、特段それを重荷とすることもなく生きている。
「サイコ」の低体温と、「木島日記」の混沌感の根がここにある。

北神との異父妹・滝子について情報が少ないのが残念。BR>イザナギ・イザナミのモチーフも意味深。
