少女コララインは越してきたお屋敷の１４番目のドアをくぐり、
もう一つの世界に出ます。そこはもとの世界にそっくりで、
別の優しいお母さんとお父さんいて、おいしい食事と楽しいおもちゃが
いっぱいで。でも少女には大変な試練が待ち受けていたのです。

全体的に不気味で暗い雰囲気が漂うファンタジーです。

ぞっと寒気がする場面も結構あり。（挿絵もかなり気持ち悪いです。）
グロテスクな生き物や、最初素晴らしく見えた世界が徐々にゆがみ
倒錯していく様子、少女の周りの大人たちの謎めいたセリフなど、
すべてが幻想的で独特なのですが、それがまた魅力的です。
女の子の勇気と知恵も見所です。ちょっと生意気な黒猫もいい味出してます。

英語に関してですが、児童書としては難しい部類に入ると思います。
かなり語彙も難しいものが使われています。
私はこのお話はとても楽しめて２回続けて読みました。
個人的には星５つなのですが、癖のある独特さがあり万人向けではないかも？
と思い、星４つにしました。でも倒錯した非現実世界が展開する

ダークファンタジーが好き、という方にはお勧めです。

児童書っていう括りなんだろうけど、装丁の不気味な雰囲気といい、子供にはちと刺激が強い？
ボタンの目の人物画は夢でうなされそう…。
もの静かな挿絵は、個人的に大好き。装丁の渋い色使いといい、日本では大人をターゲットに出版しているのかも。

話に華を添えるのは、個性豊かな老人たち。そして黒猫。物語が繰り広げられる古い大きな屋敷といい、客間のアンティーク家具といい、一見、むかしの
おとぎ話を思わせるものの、主人公の両親がSOHOでコンピューター関係の仕事をしている所がいかにも現代的。

コワカワイイってことで、１０代後半~の女子におすすめ。
