身近な野球という題材とガイジン選手という名ガイド役を通じて、日本についての理解が新たになる。ベースボールはplay baseballで、野球はwork baseballであるという一文は、言い得て妙である。つまり、ベースボールはフィールド内が全てであり、野球は球場に入るまでがほとんど全てである。日本のプロ野球選手が長時間練習することはそれによって安心（精神的な到達感）を得るためで、“サラリーマン”にも共通するといえる。我々は、高校野球が精神修養の場であることは理解しているが、その流れが実はプロ野球にも脈々と流れていることに気づかされる。キャンプでの千本ノック、特に長嶋監督直々のノックを受けるところに、万人が一つの精神的な高揚を感じるところに、精神修養である野球が息づいていることを改めて実感する。プロの技を見ること以上に、技を極めるためにどのような修行を積んでいるかを知り、納得する、これが日本人のプロ野球の見方である。ここに、日本人の人生観ともいうべきものが凝縮されており、ガイジン選手が理解に苦しむ根源的な相違点であることが理解できる。この日本人の特質を日本人自身が理解することが、ビジネスがグローバル化する現在、必要不可欠といえる。

野球を通して日本人と日本文化を客観的に見つめることができます。日本式野球練習法から、日本人に合った学校および職場での教育指導法が思い浮かんできます。無理して外国流儀を取り入れるまでもなく、日本人は日本人に合ったやり方でやってみて、成果がこれ以上上がらないと思われるところまで行ったほうがよいということでしょう。文化は簡単には変えられませんし。そして自信がついたところで、外国流を試すのが賢いやり方だと思います。この本では、日本人は「練習しすぎだ」と繰り返されていますが、そこから生まれたのがイチローであることに誇りを持ちたいですね。イチローはアメリカ選手の怠惰を嘆いているのですから。いずれにせよ、日本文化の確認には最適の一冊です。
