辛口コラム集。
役に立つ情報と溜飲の下がるタンカが満載です。
ただし、愛国心について述べたものではありません。
ここでいう「国」とは、時事問題というレベルのことで、
時事問題が起こる空間を「国」と言っているのです。

愛国心をことさら感じさせる本ではありません。単なる時事評論です。しかし視点が鋭い。
また時評の文庫本にありがちな「一寸古い」ところを加筆・修正しているため、古くささを感じさせないところがありがたい。
私の考え方と合わない部分もありましたが、こういった多様なものの見方には感心させられました。新聞等に連載したものなので、それぞれの時評は短く、電車等で読むには最適です。

愛国心というと、脂ぎった保守主義者や右よりの論壇翁たちの顔が思い浮かんでくるけれど（私は彼らを別に嫌いではないが）、彼らの主張は得てして抽象的に過ぎたり、恫喝的であったり、形式的であったりして、現実の生活との間にわざわざ溝を作っているような印象がある。
　その点この本は、社会時評を通じて、現実の生活に即して愛国心について言及している。その筆記はいたって具体的であり、論理的であり、逆説的である。大上段にして使い古されたお題目がなく、読み進めるにつけ思わず何箇所もページの端を折ってしまう。刺激や発見が実に多いからである。
　なぜか？それは著者が社会事象と対峙するにあたって、常に仮説（多くは逆説的なものだろう）を立ててそれを膨大な資料、取材によって検証するというスタイルをとっているためだ。
　ｐ１９１「無駄な苦労をせずラクして成果をあげるには」など、タイトルこそ凡庸だけれど、内容はとてもすばらしい。どうしてレッスンプロ（例えばバレエの）という職業存在が成り立つのか、それまで考えてもみることもなかった。
　「日本の良心」とでもいうべき筆者の良質な文章が散りばめられた、発見と刺激に溢れた時論集である。
　この本が売れないとなると、もうタイトルのつけ方が悪いとしか言いようがない（笑）
