江戸時代の「姫さま」といえば、確かに思いつくのは「大奥」ばかり。しかし、江戸時代には大奥以外にもたくさんの姫さまがいて、娘として、姉妹として、妻として、母として生きていたはずである。彼女たちが日々どのように暮らしていたのかは、ほとんど知られていないのではないか。本書は、姫さまのペットや娯楽、婚姻などのエピソードを通じて、大江戸姫さまライフの一端を明かしている。
本書によると、端的には、姫さまは暇だったらしい。武家社会での彼女たちの最大の役割は、誰かの娘として（養子でも可）、誰かと結婚することであり、「その家にいる」という存在そのものだけが必要とされるのである。高貴な身分であればもちろん家事などする必要はなく、かといって自由な外出もままならない。時代が下ると、「夫唱婦随」的な倫理観の象徴たることを押し付けられ、自分の意志や個性などは完全に黙殺されて明治を迎えたのである。
本書は、「姫さま」たちの声なき声を史料から洗い出し、隠された悲哀を示している。軽く読めるので、お時間のない向きにもお勧めできる。

　面白い！　とにかく副題が「ペットからお輿入れ」まで。江戸時代のお輿入れというと、かの有名な「和宮様」しか思い出せないのだが、実際は武家にしろ公家にしろ、たくさんのお姫様が存在していたはずなのに、歴史の表舞台に出てくることは殆どない。私達が知っている江戸時代の女性は、「大奥」のエピソードに関するものぐらいである。
　その乏しい知識を補って余りある、この本の姫様のエピソードの数々（老いても姫様、夫より身分の高い格上の姫様、降嫁の道具としての姫様等）。ペットのチンのお墓から剥製、御輿入れ行列の解説や、とにかく写真と資料が豊富で、見ているだけでも楽しめる。
　しかし、もっとも注目すべきは、何故姫様の実態が21世紀まで明らかにする動きが無かったかであろう。歴史は巧妙に隠蔽され、捏造されるのである。固有名詞は剥奪され、江戸から近代日本への価値の転換が、女性の生き方をある方向へと固定してしまうのだ。
　堅苦しいジェンダー論ではないが、最終的には読者が隠された枠組みに気付かざるを得ない、しなやかな結びの部分まで、味わって読んでもらいたい１冊である。

武家社会に夫より格の高い妻がいたことは、名高い政略結婚の例で明らかです。利根姫御守殿の絵図を見れば、夫より格は上です。竹姫、利根姫両御守殿が並ぶ『武鑑』は圧巻です。『江戸鑑』にある鶴姫も千代姫も、みなさん「御簾中」だったんですね。ちなみに著者は「明治の近代化が女性蔑視につながり、江戸時代の姫は忘れ去られたという結論」は出していないように私には思えます。
