今の私たちが生きているのは、オリジナリティを重視する社会である。そこでは、「個性」や「自分らしさ」が尊重され、模倣は「猿まね」「剽窃」として退けられていく。

しかしこの本を読むと、そのようなオリジナリティ重視の考え方（独創主義）がたかだか19世紀末から成立した神話であるにすぎないことがよくわかる。それまで日本でも西洋でも、模倣を軸にした豊かな文化が展開されていた。本書は、そうした「模倣文化」の豊かさを明らかにして、独創主義に代わる再創主義を提示する書である。

この本の長所は、単なる日本文化論を越えて、アメリカのハッカー文化やインターネット上のオープンソースにもきちんと触れている所だろう。また、「似ているとはどういうことか」という基本的な問題にまで踏み込んでいた点がよかった。著者の専門は情報学とのことだが、おそらく国文学者ではこうはならなかったはず。著作権制度の弊害を考えるためにも、ぜひ読んでいきたい一冊。
