童話作家の著者は、私生児として生まれ、10歳で放浪者となり、地方の養護施設で少女時代を送る。その後、生母に引き取られ、大学卒業後、小学校教員として職に就くも、「子供たちを全身全霊で愛すべき教員は、自らが幸せでなければならない」矛盾に気付き、教員を辞める。そして、結婚して妻となっても、自分の過去は夫に語ることが出来ないでいた。

地方の九人兄弟の大家族で育った夫に、普通の市民として欠落している、常識、作法について毎晩、質問し書き留める。そんな時に目にした新聞の懸賞童話の募集、それらに次々と応募するようになる。題材は、教員時代の担任の生徒だったり、夫の少年時代であったり…そうした創作を通じて、次第に癒され、劣等感やコンプレックスから解放されていく。

本書では、自らの体験から「癒しを求め童話を書く」ことを読者に紹介している。自分だけの「門外不出」でも、懸賞狙いでも、もちろんプロを目指すのも良し、構えないで、まず書いてみようと、背中を押すような本である。ただ、ハウツー本ではないので、そちらに興味がある人には、あわせて、その手の本を読む必要があるだろう。

だが、何故童話を書くのか、下手くそでもいいから、まず、あなたにしか書けないような童話の原石が記憶の引き出しにしまってあるから、まず書いてみようよと、そうすれば、とっても癒されるし、癒されて自分が元気になると言うことは、人をたくさん愛することがまた出来るようにもなれるよって。。。

著者は、「毎日が童話」だとも言っている。知らず知らずのうちに、繰り返す日々、その中で、たくさんの人と出会い、語らい、同じ時を過ごす。他者を思いやり、愛情を持って接することの大切さ、これは元教員で挫折感を味わい、再び大切なものを見つけた彼女の深い思いからであろう。
