　読んだのはかなり昔ですが、未だに心が騒ぎます。
確か長耳エルフを日本に定着させた作品とも記憶しています。
それほどの影響力があったという事でしょう。

　主人公は騎士を目指す少年であり、その冒険が中心となって展開していきます。

主人公は、その若さ故に無茶とも言える行動をしていますが、読者にきちんと納得がいくように丁寧に書かれていますし、むしろその行動を当然と思って読み進めていけます。
主人公の仲間も個性的かつしっかりと書かれており、標準的とも言える構成なのに、それを感じさせません。

　主人公らの敵は、灰色の魔女と呼ばれる恐るべき魔法戦士であり、呪われた島と呼ばれる舞台そのものの戦乱です。
主人公らは浮いた理想ではなく、この大地に根を張る住人の１!人として、戦乱と魔女に立ち向かっていきます。

　そして、私がもう１人の主人公と認識する、騎士を目指す少年の仲間の盗賊。
光を浴びる少年と、その影に立つ盗賊。

行動を共にしながらも、歩く道は違っているのです。その対比が見事でした。

　物語に構成、登場人物から結末まで、どれを取っても絶品です。
古典といわれて久しいと思いますが、名作はいつまで経っても名作だと思います。
ファンタジーの世界に興味が無くても、きっと楽しめる１冊だと思います。

コンプティーク誌に連載されていたテーブルトークRPGの実況リプレイ企画が
まさかここまでのヒット作となり、マルチメディアに進出するとは・・・

小説を読んで水野良さんの文才に驚かされました。
上手いんですよね。
設定の細かさ、キャラクターの魅力、文章の読みやすさとバランスが良いです。
　
自分が感じたのは
初めの頃の主人公だったパーンが
後半では「自由騎士」って事で、名声を得て有名人として登場するのが
小説の書き方として斬新だと思いました。
普通の話だったら、主人公達とは別のキャラで「伝説の騎士」みたいな強いキャラが登場する
なんて事になるんでしょうが
この小説では、それが当初の主人公になるんですよね
冒険を始めた頃のパーンを知っているだけに
自由騎士として数々の武勇伝を持ち、戦闘能力もかなり上達して登場する後半は
彼のファンとしてもとても嬉しく感じた物です。
上手い書き方するなぁと思いますよ、いやマジで・・・

水野良のデビュー作ということになります。つまりアマチュアとして書いた作品です。確かに今の水野良のレベルの作品と較べて読み返してみると、荒削りです。展開も文章も描写もキャラクターも、非常にアラが目立つ気がします。でもやっぱり面白いです。裏を返せば、著者水野良はここからスタートして作家としてかなりレベルアップしたということでもあります。
主人公パーンにすんなり感情移入して、冒険の世界へと旅立つことができます。ワクワクできます。まぁ、作中のパーンはワクワクしている場合じゃないかもしれませんが……
強いて難点を挙げるなら、以降の水野良作品の主人公はどれも父親の陰を引きずっているというワンパターンな設定を持っています。本書『ロードス島戦記―灰色の魔女』のパーンもそうです。しかもこの巻だけでその設定は片づいてしまいますし。

テーブルトークロールプレイングゲームのリプレイとして始まったロードス島シリーズ、この本から大きくなりました。ヒロインのハイエルフ、ディードリットのプレイヤーは実は男性だったそうですが。それが後には永遠の乙女ですから……
とにかくロードス島の世界を楽しむならば、本書から始まるロードス島戦記シリーズが一番でしょう。後のシリーズは多少蛇足感がともなってしまいますので……

今の観点から振り返るとアラが目立つ、という点で本書の評価は☆-1です。
