地球の未来を背景に，7編の短編と，それを語るアンドロイドと聞き手のヒトからなる物語．
短編の前半はあまり人工知能とは関係がないが，
中盤辺りから意識のハードプロブレムに関する著者自身の回答を踏まえた人工知能のストーリーになっている．
この領域についてwikipedia程度の基礎知識があるとより楽しめるだろう．

ハートウォーミングなストーリーの連続で，
SFとしてはやや物足りなさを感じる向きもあるかもしれないが，
人工知能が誕生するためのブレークスルーが，
それに関わるヒトのある種の愛情だとする設定からは，著者の科学への愛情や信頼が感じられる．

人工知能同士のシュールな会話や，未来におけるヒトと人工知能の関係から，
ヒトを超えてしまった人工知能のやさしさが見られる一方，
合理的な思考から導き出される冷たさもうまく表現されている．
この対比もなかなかうまい．

人工知能を少々美化しすぎているいるきらいもなきにしもあらずだが，
一読の価値のある作品．

山本弘さんと言えば、「トンデモ本」の人としてのイメージしかなかった。
たまたま店頭に並んでいたのを発見して、あまり期待もせずに読んでみたのだけど本当に素晴らしい作品だった。

個々の物語はどれもAIやらVRだの現代的なテーマを上手く使いこなしつつ、あくまで人間の物語としてさわやかな読後感を持つ作品。とにかく読んでいて気持ちがいい。
そして何と言っても最後のアイの物語。
人間が自分たちより上位の人工知能に取り変わられて惨めな生活をしている世界、それは今まで否定的に描かれていた世界観のはずだった。しかし、最後に明かされた真相はそうではない。
人間がずっと夢見ながらも自らの持つ限界に夢やぶれて挫折した様々な事、その意志を引き継いで旅だっていく者たち。
人間からすれば惨めな状況なはずなのに、何故これほどまでに清々しいのだろう。

このような美しい物語を贈ってくれた山本氏に感謝する。

5.0 out of 5 stars 人工知能・ロボット好きにはたまらない一冊, 2009/8/2
短編集です。シンギュラリティ系のSFです。
小飼弾氏も大絶賛のようです。
そうでなくても、個人的に大好きなでおすすめな本で文庫化されて良かったです。読んでいて普通に涙がでそうになりました。
SFは結構いろいろ読んでますが、読後感がこんなに爽快なSF本は久しぶりでした。
この本に似た系統の本としては瀬名秀明の「ハル」（あしたのロボット）や、菅浩江の「I am」とかかなと思います。この本を読んで面白いと思った人は読んでみるといいかもしれません。
