人気ゲームソフト「デビルメイクライ」の小説版。

本編はゲームとは関連の無いオリジナルストーリーですが、
ゲーム上の設定や世界観をしっかりと守られて書かれています。
ストーリーはデビル１の前の話。
つまりダンテが便利屋を営む前ということになり、ちょうどデビル３の時期と重なります。
登場人物もほとんどがオリジナルですが、皆独特の味があって読んでいると愛着がわいてきます。
そしてゲームでも重要なあのキャラも！？
もちろんダンテのクールなセリフ等もしっかり再現されていますので、
デビルファンなら一読の価値アリです！

テンポの良い会話や、戦闘シーンの爽快感、話の端々にある和みのシーンや泣きのシーン等はデビルファンなら一度は眼にしておきたいものだと思う。ゲームを始める前の人にも、最後までやりつくした人にもおすすめできる一品。

カプコンのゲーム原作小説というとスト2時代からいろいろ挑戦していますが、これはその数十冊の中でもおそらくベスト5に入るでしょう。ゲームをプレイした人間ならこそ見たいあんな場面やこんな場面がちゃんと入っており、この手の本で毎度悩まされる作者の一人上手や下手な蘊蓄垂れ流しにもなっておらず、カタルシスがあります。
とにかくダンテがカッコいい、しかしそんなカッコいいダンテが手酷くやられる、それでもとにかく最後はダンテが邪悪この上ない敵をぶっとばしてスカッと勝利する、という図式、まさにゲームで我々が体験するそのままと言えるのが良いのでしょう。

ダンテの愛銃エボニー＆アイボリーに刻印された「トニー・レッドグレイブ」の名の謎解き、名を隠し再起の時を待つという英雄譚のお約束の踏襲等、細かな仕込みも魅力的なものばかりでした。
DMC3発売前には田中プロデューサーが「今回は国内でだけ発表されていた神谷著の小説（これは誤りで、同氏は監修）をベースにするから！」と海外インタビューでまで話題にもしていた、つまり一目置かれていた一冊です。DMC3という違う時間軸ができてしまった今でも、なお色あせる事のないしっかりとした作品と言えるでしょう。
