ガールズファイト「ガールズブラッド」のファイター達は、社長の趣味で適当な設定を与えられ、それに応じた衣装を身に着けて戦う。
彼女達は少女という年頃を過ぎており、本人たちも自分を「大人」だと認識している。
しかし、これは少女達の物語だ。女性達の心の中の少女達の物語だ。女性の赤と、少女のピンクが交差する。

主人公たちは、それぞれ、家庭に縁がない。居場所がない。帰る場所がない。
自分がない。自分のしたいことも、好きなことも見つからない。
檻の中は、奇妙な安心感を与えてくれる。閉じ込められているが、同時に、守られてもいる。
どこにも行けなくても、何かをできなくても、許してくれるのが、手錠であり、檻となる。
問題は、死にたくなるほどに、愛情が足りていないということ。
檻の外に出て行くことができた少女達の先行きが明るいかどうかはわからないが、少しだけしたたかにしぶとく、彼女達は生きていくことができるのだろうと思った。

ファミ通文庫から２００３年２月に出版されたものの５年ぶりの「再版」と言う事になりますが、読んでみて、余りの充実ぶりに驚きました！

舞台は六本木。廃校となった小学校を使い、非合法？のガールファイトを売り物にする怪しい風俗風？の店。鉄製の檻の中で、夜毎繰り広げられる女たちの肉弾戦、あるいはそれに似たパフォーマンス。それを見つめる男たちの視線。酒を飲む客、指名されて相手をする女たち・・・。生きる意味を求め、漂よい、流される女たち・・・？読み出してすぐ、そんな雰囲気が伝わってきます。オイこれはファミ通文庫だったんだろう！！？？と聞きたくなる。（笑）ヤバイな〜・・・と思いながらも、主人公たちの感覚的な会話や、濃密な情景描写に引き寄せられる・・・この異様なまでの筆力！５年前の作品だと言うが、「初期の作品」という感じが全くしないのは何故？？（汗）

全体は三部からなり、一人語りの主人公は、前の章の脇役が引き継いで行く。都合三人の主人公が登場するが、話も後半に行くほど長くなる。結末は、苦しみ抜いてきた主人公が護るべきものを見つけ、未来に向かって歩き出す場面で終わります。作者はその苦しみの様をまるで自己の体験のように描き出していて、主人公の生々しい叫びに打たれます・・・。そして、最後は、全てを包み込む柔らかな光がさしこむ・・・。

独特の飛翔感と密着感が全編に溢れ、どこを読んでも桜庭一樹の世界が広がっています。きわめて今日的なエピソードも盛りだくさんで一気に読めました。

作者自ら「自身の転向点」と位置づけているらしく、
当初ライトノベルとしての出版ながら、
テーマや感情描写等は一般的な小説に比し全く遜色無い。

確かに舞台選びや、登場人物造形、衣装など
設定面でのキッチュさは否めないが
都会の生活/孤独/閉塞感/生きがいなど
驚くほどストレートに、真摯に、
そしてきついほど生々しく描かれている。

本当にいい作家だ、と感じられる傑作。
