　著者は伝承文学の研究者で、怪談や伝説についての著作が多い。
　最近は角川ソフィア文庫から、安倍晴明、役行者、江戸の怪談などの本を矢継ぎ早に出している。
　本書は、「四谷怪談」「牡丹灯籠」「皿屋敷」「乳房榎」の４つの話を取り上げ、現代語で書き直したもの。原文をかなり尊重しているようだが、随所で省略や補足が行われ、読みやすいよう工夫してくれている。
　４話とも、物語の全体を紹介してくれた点が嬉しい。たとえば、「皿屋敷」なら、普通の読者はお菊さんが皿を数える場面しか知らない。しかし、それは元の話のごく一部であって、本当はそこに首切り役人とか大盗賊とか徳川の姫様の話とかが絡んでくるのである。それがきちんと残されているので、物語の奥行きが分かり、勉強になった。
　その一方で、話が煩雑すぎて分かりにくいという弊害も。まあ、そのあたりはじっくり読んでもらうしかないか。
