読み手の好みによって評価が分かれるだろう。
新本格のファンなら、大傑作ということになるだろうし、
社会派推理のファンなら、ストーリーに起伏が乏しく、
500ページもあるわりには退屈ということになろう。
ただ、両者とも否定できないのは、
伏線の張り方が見事で、回収もそつなく行われているという点だろう。
新本格のファンではない私は、その点を取って星4つとした。
減点の原因は「やられた」感がなかったこと。
丁寧に作りこまれているが、
もう少し「おおーっ」というのがあってもいいと思うんだが。



村上龍の「半島を出よ」でもそうだったが、この歳になると、
1ページにおける字数が多いと本当に疲れる。
最近は、できるだけ1ページに字数が少ない本を無意識のうちに選んでいる。
年取ったのかなぁ。

張り巡らされた伏線が鮮やかに回収されていく様は、流石だなーと思わせます。
最後まで読ませます。
ただ、人物の心理、特に事件そのものに関わる部分で納得いかない点がいくつかあったのは事実です。
例えば、
・「生首に聞いてみろ」の「生首」の動機が、あれではちと薄すぎないか？
・回顧展の目玉になる石膏像の首が切り取られてるのに、関係者が一人を除いて「回顧展どうしよう」と心配してないのは何故？
等、一つ一つは小さいんですが、物語がきっちり作られてるだけに目立ってしまう・・。
逆に言うと、それでも最後まで面白く読ませるプロットは、凄いんですが。

読み終わって鳥肌が立った。物語は地味だ。事件は淡々とすすみ唐突に終息を迎える。息づまるサスペンスも残酷な描写もない。けれど、探偵がパズルを組み立てたとき、僕たちは想像もしなかった絵を見せられる。それまで思い描いていた世界が名探偵の導きで一変するのだ。導き出されるのは事件の構造だけではない。おぞましい犯人の悪意と、それにおどらされた被害者たちの悲劇。僕たちはトリックだけではなく、物語のホントウの意味を知るのだ。余分なものを削ぎ落とした探偵小説がこんなにも美しく輝くなんて。何十年も昔に出された問題と真っ正面からぶつかり合ってくれた探偵法月綸太郎と作家法月綸太郎に心からお礼を言いたい。
