年上の少年の成長を通して主人公の成長を書いている。
置いていかれたような気分になる主人公、周囲が変わっていく寂しさ。
周囲は変わっても自分の本質「リズム」は変わらないと教える少年。
最後は少年を応援し見送る。
少しだけ大人になる。
子供に小、中、高校生時代に１回ずつ読んで欲しい。
自分の成長に気がつけるはず。

さすがは児童文学賞。こどもにも読みやすい、のびのびとした世界が広がっている。
のびのび過ぎるくらいに。
主人公は中学1年生だが、この作品を同世代が読むと「中学はそんなに甘くない。こんな風に生きられるはず無い」と思うんだろうな。受け入れられない感じ。
私がこの作品を読んで欲しいと思うのは、「中学生」という言葉にあこがれてしまう小学生達。
そして悪意まみれの世の中で、大事なものを忘れちゃってる大人達。
流し読みすれば、あっというまに読めてしまう。でも、じっくりとかみしめながら読むと、「自分を見失わない」ことの大切さを感じられる作品。
自分自身のリズムを、取り戻そう。

『リズム』です。
本は薄いし、文章も平易なので、すぐに読み終わることができます。
が、内容が無いわけではありません。
中学生前後の年代の読者にとっては非常に共感できると思いますし、大人が読んでも味わい深いです。

この作品は、第31回講談社児童文学新人賞受賞作者のデビュー作であり、1991年に単行本として出たものですが、2009年にこの文庫本で出るにあたって、現代に合わせた改稿がかなり行われているようです。
20年近く経っているとはいえ、おそらく瑞々しさが失われているとは思えないので、できれば当時のままの文章の方が良かった、と個人的には思いました。

主人公は中学校一年生の女の子で、大人とも子供ともつかない微妙な年齢ですが、児童文学という枠ですし、どちらかというと大人との対比の都合で子供寄りで描かれています。そのため実年齢よりもやや幼いかなという印象もありますけど。
仮病とか子供に戻ればとか、随所にはっとする表現があり、汚れた大人にはまぶしすぎるくらいです。
主人公以外の登場人物も上手く描かれているし、小さな伏線を次々と回収して行くストーリーは飽きがこず、まさにリズムよく読ませてくれる良作です。
