上巻から下巻まで次を読みたくてページを進め、気が付けば一日で読み終えてしまった。少年たちの夏が終わった。それでもまた夏はやってくる。飛び込み台のあるプールを見つけたら彼らを探してしまいそうだ。

天才と呼ばれる要一をメインとした第３章。そしてオリンピック出場のための選考会が描かれる第４章が収録されている。

知季や飛沫とは違い、両親が元オリンピック選手ということで否が応でも注目を集めてしまう天才ダイバー要一。第３章では彼の苦しみが丁寧に描かれています。親や友人、大人たちとの関係に悩む彼の姿は読んでいてつらさを覚えます。いろんなものを捨てて飛び込みにかけてきた要一の思いが語られます。

第４章は誰が出場権を得られるかの過酷な戦い。知季、飛沫、要一、代表に選ばれるのは誰か?目が離せません。

ダイビングというマイナースポーツに魂をかけて挑み、成長してゆく少年達の話。
やはり、森絵都さんならではの惹きつけられる文章が魅力的です。
なんといっても、飛び込みのシーンでの臨場感と、緊迫感。
まるで、自分がその場にいるような、いや、むしろ選手自身になったような気になります。
読んでいて鳥肌が立つ本なんて、私はめったに出合ったことがありません。

知季、飛沫、要一、それぞれの視点から描かれた、飛び込みという競技に対する想い。
彼らは様々な葛藤の中で、飛び込みというものが自分にとってどんなものなのかを確固たるものにしていきました。

最後の第4章には、彼らや、彼らの周りのすべての登場人物の思いがつまっています。
飛び込みのために犠牲にしてきたものたち。それでもなお、飛び込みをやめられなかったこと。
オリンピック行きをかけた戦いで、それらすべてがわずか１，４秒に集約される。
最後まで、誰が勝つのかまったく予想できず、とにかくハラハラさせられました。
そして読んだ後は、とても爽やかな気持ちになれました。
