ますます哲学書の趣を増していく。
本当に小学生や中学生が読んでいるのか。
バッテリーを読破した小学生の生の声が聞きたいなぁ。


関係ありませんが、去る大手中学受験塾の小学校４年生向けの国語のテストに
バッテリーが長文読解として出てました。
難しかったそうです。
平均点がいつもより１０点ほど低かったです。

　対戦するものの心を揺さぶる剛速球と、人を寄せ付けず決して妥協しない、抜き身の刃物のような強烈な個性を持つ、天才少年投手・巧。
　そのボールに魅せられ、衝突を繰り返しつつも巧の球と、巧の存在そのものを受けとめ続けようとする捕手・豪。
　このバッテリーを中心に、チームメイト、ライバル、そして大人たちが引き寄せられ、またはそこから広がる波紋に巻き込まれ、衝突と邂逅を繰り返し…。

　…というと、“王道青春群像”のように思えますが、そんな甘口のお話ではありません。

“世界の不自由さや窮屈さ”を、己の力で切り裂こうとする少年の幼稚で獰猛で、だからこそ鋭利で美しい純粋さ。 それが、根性無しの社会人として、その不自由さや窮屈さに無自覚に飼いならされたオッサンの心にも突き刺さる。
　痛い…でも心地いい（ヘンな意味じゃありませんよ。）

　もともと児童文学として書かれたらしいが、子どもだけに読ませとくのなんてもったいない！

強豪横手第二中との練習試合で、天才ピッチャー巧と豪のバッテリーはガタガタに崩れた。初めての他校との試合であろうと、相手が全国ベスト４のチームであろうと関係なく、巧のプライドと豪の心は粉々に打ち砕かれた。その崩れたバッテリーの行方を描いたのが四巻。

巧の属する新田東中が実力差歴然のチームと戦えたのは、巧の球が横手の天才バッター門脇の勝負魂を燃えさせたからだ。門脇が小学校から共に野球をしてきた瑞垣に相談をもちかけ、学校に無許可での試合がセッティングされたのだった。この瑞垣がバッテリーを潰した張本人。常に門脇という天才の後ろを歩み、屈折と本音をよく回る舌で覆い隠してきた一筋縄ではいかない少年。同じく天才の相棒として悩み抜く豪とは大違いのキャラクターだ。

四巻では巧と豪の煩悶が描かれ続ける。本格的な野球シーンはわずかで、これが野球小説か？？と苛立つ向きもあろうかと思う。けれど、二人と周辺の人物の心情や動きが丹念に書かれた本書をわたしは好きだと思った。

「ページを費やすこと＝悩みの深さの表れ」などと単純なことを言うつもりはない。きまじめで慎重な豪の心の過程を描くのにこのペースが合っていると感じたのだ。そしてあの自分本位で性急な巧が、「投げたい」という切実な思いを抱えつつも、「豪とは、たぶん抱えている傷が違うのだ（中略）自分の傷は自分でなめてしか、治せない」として待ち続ける様子に、豪への信頼の深さが見えたのだ・・・・・

いつもながらバッテリーをフォローしようと心をくだく友人たち、巧の弟・青波もいとおしい。
