政治を題材にした小説。主人公の心の葛藤の描写が繊細でよい。作者の前作の「不自由な心」はあまり面白くなかったが、デビュー作の「一瞬の光」と並ぶ良作だと思う。

デビュー作の「一瞬の光」ですっかりまいってフアンになった。

本作は、政治の話題が中心に見えるけれど、むしろ「家」と言うもの、
あるいは日本の家長と言うもの、それが色濃く出る舞台としての政治家の家
と言うだけであって、本質的には政治の小説ではないと思う。
世間体、建て前、これが最も顕著に現われる政治家のウチ。それが舞台だ。

作品としては、デビュー作以来、心優しき、弱きオトコと、ひ弱に見えなが
ら、どっこい芯の強いオンナの物語と言う構図。
そこのところの舞台まわしの政治の裏側が、ちょっと煩わしい部分もあり、デ
ビュー作のケレンミのなさに軍配が上がる。

不器用な男も、支えるもの（オンナ）があれば、いくらも再生できるんだな。
ありきたりの再起、成功、の結末にならず、全くそれまでの政治の力学を排除
した、意表を突いた結末はなかなかのもだと思う。
いろんな意味で、強い女性に感謝と拍手。

優秀で将来を嘱望されながら、事件をきっかけに精神の安定を失った男の再生の物語。まず、大手出版社に勤めていた著者が描く政治家とその世界に圧倒的なリアリティがあり、国家と個人の関係、政治家という職業、日本の政治システムなど、その世界にどっぷりとつかることができる。その上で、主人公の心の葛藤が深遠で、人間存在まで考えさせる読み応えのある思想小説である。タイトルに書いたように、ドストエフスキーの「罪と罰」や「カラマーゾフの兄弟」と同じような小説体験を得ることができる良い本だと思う。
