　現実（夢や幻覚）が虚構（ゲーム）に取り込まれ、再び現実（肉体感覚）に送り返される。この果てしない繰り返しのうちに無数の可能世界（ストーリー）が分岐し、イジェクトもリセットもできない入れ子式の無間地獄が延々と続いていく。「ハグルマ」と名づけられた開発中のゲーム（「プレイヤーを催眠状態にまで導き、その当人のなかにある夢や幻覚を掘り出してみせるゲーム」）にはまった男の悪夢の世界を描いた作品。歯車とは「ある規則で動いている世界に、別の軸の世界からの力を伝える仕組み」のことで、人間の意識の比喩である。世界の「すべてに意味があり、それらは互いに作用しながら連動し、ひとつの仕組みを作っている」のではなくて、「ほんとうはすべてがばらばらで、人間の意識がそれらを無理やり噛みあわせ繋げている」。この中学生でも考えつきそうな、だからこそ「肉体感覚」に根ざした真正の哲学の問題がそこから立ちあがるはずのアイデアに、作者が心底リアリティを感じていれば、もっと迫真の恐怖を描くことができたろう。カバー裏に「『ドクラ・マグラ』的狂気の宴」と書いてあったが、誇大広告だ。

　子供が叫ぶ。「ハグルマ」という呪文のような声。儀式のごとく壁に描かれる、歯車の絵。墜死した同僚が残した奇妙なゲームにのめりこんでいく主人公だが、いつしかゲームと現実は渾然一体となっていくのだった。

　売り文句に「ドグラ・マグラ的狂気の宴がここに！！」とあるが、夢野久作「ドグラ・マグラ」はもっと整然としたミステリであって、あまり似ていないと思うよ。設定は岡嶋二人「クラインの壺」で、怪物デザインはグレアム・ワトキンス「妖女の深情け」＆デイヴィッド・クローネンバーグ「ビデオドローム」という感じ。効果を狙ったのだろうけど、変調文体で少々読みにくい１冊。
　主人公がゲームにハマる気持ちがよくわからない。呪いだからか？現実の憂さをそのまま封じ込めたエログロ!ゲームに、ふつうハマるかなあ。私なら、こんなゲームやらないけどなあ。

表面的には、いつもののほほんとしたＳＦ作品とは少し感触が違うが、これはこれで良い。妄想と現実が入り組んで、訳が分からなくなるという作品は、これまでにも沢山書かれてきたが、北野勇作のほぼ全作品に共通しているのは、そういう状況に陥った主人公が、絶望することも戦うこともなく日常の一部としてそれを受け入れているという点だろう。漠然とした恐怖や悪意の気配を感じながらも、その実体は不可解で、答えはなく、それでも生きていくというのが「現実」というものではないだろうか。非現実的な展開のこの作品が「リアル」な点があるとすればそこを書いているからだろう。ジャンル小説（今回はホラー。いつもはＳＦ）を装ってはいるが、むしろ純文学との共通点が多い作家だ。（『ドグラ・マグラ』を宣伝に使ったのは逆効果。名前は似ていても、夢野久作とは相容れない作家だと思う。良し悪しではなく、質の問題として）
