一つ一つは特別に怖い話ではないんです｡
起承転結があまりしっかりしていなくて,
こんな不思議な話があった.......なんだったんだろう？
と言うパターンが繰り返して徐々にぞーっとしてくるのでした｡

表紙に目のイラストがあるのだけど、
こどもがそれを面白がって顔にお面のように当てて遊ぶのを
やめなさい!と怒ってしまった｡
だって...怖いんだもん｡

この本は、日中読んでもあまり怖くありません。本当に威力を発揮するのは夜。ちょっとユーモラスな感じのする表紙さえも恐ろしく見えてくるから不思議です。
気軽に読めるのでホラー初心者にお勧めです。ちなみに、私は一気読みすることができませんでした。

『神仏にまつわる話』『さまよえるものたち…』『訊ねてくるもの･･･』『残されしもの…』『路上を漂うもの…』『そこに帰りたくない…』各章の題名から、怖さへの期待わくわく。そのわりに怖い印象を受けないのは、一般に考えがちな血みどろだったり、おどろおどろした幽霊ではないからだろう。まず、それに遭遇した本人達からして、あまり恐怖を感じている様子がない。で、読んでいるこっちも怖くない。
　でも、夜一人で読み返してみよう。できたらあまり静か過ぎない夜半がいい。外に聞こえる物音、人の話し声、それが霊のたてた物音じゃないと、今度は自分の部屋の窓に現れないといいきれるか。貴方は振り返って確かめることができるだろうか。あまりに淡々とした語り口が、かえって日常を感じさせて怖い。
　一番怖かったのは、京極夏彦の途中で唐突に切れてしまう序文と、九十九話で終了しているこの話を一晩で読まなくて良かったと思わせてしまうあとがき。百話目を自分で持っているから。
