この文庫には９つの短篇が収められている。「セカンド・ショット」というタイトルは、その中の一篇に付されたものに過ぎない。が、９作品とも「ショット」という語感に包まれて共鳴しているような気がする。川島氏流小説の描き方は「ショット」だ。

それは、主人公の心中に少しもブレーキを効かせることなく進む、口語口調の文体によるのかも知れない。思春期を素材としているためかも知れない。とにもかくにも、彼ら主人公のシュールな口調は、中味がないようでいて実は「正直なショット」の極みだ。最後に収録されている「消える。」のラストは~君がいま、本をとじると、ぼくは消える。君は、まあ、ぼくのことは、二度とおもいださないだろう。そんなふうにして、君もだれかにとじられる。君が、終わる。~「ショット」とはこういうことかと発見の感があった。けれど。確かに主人公のことは思い出さないだろう。そして、ここの文章を読者は思い出すだろう。「本をとじると、ぼくは消える」という、フィクションにおけるひとつの哲学。おつに澄まして発せられた、何と玄妙な言葉だろう。本をとじると主人公が消えるのは、読者の誰もが自分自身の人生の主人公だからだ。奇しくも（？）「ショット」には「試み」「当てずっぽう」といった意味もある。

読んだ感じ、話の内容が駄目と言うのではなく、文体が少し軽い感じがしてしまう。
ただ、中学くらいの少年達がメインなので、これはこれで味が出るようになっているのかもしれない。
ただ、表題作のセカンドショットはバスケ経験者としてなんとも言いがたい作品だ。なんていうか、覇気がない。
今の時代のスポーツってこんなのなのかなぁって、ちょっと幻滅してしまう部分もあった。

　全部で９編の短編集。初期の、ジュニア向けにお茶を濁したようなのが３作。これはガッカリ。でもやはり表題作「セカンド・ショット」はいい。ジュニア向けっぽいけど、かなりいい。スポーツ青春物として、「800」の路線上にある。
　「セビージャ」も、少し趣を変えて深みがある。と思ったら、コレだけ書き下ろしだった。
　とにかく私は３つが地雷だった。あなたにとってはどうだろう。嫌いな作品がないかもしれないし、同じく３作が嫌いでも、実は別な３作かもしれない。さて、このうち皆さんはどれが気に入りますかね。ふふふ。
