確か、中学２年生の夏でした。

マンガを買いに本屋に行ったのですが、たまたま「ナツイチ」の帯がついた

この本が目に留まりました。

僕は小説なんてほとんど読んだことがなかったのですが、数ページ読んでみて

もう抜け出せなくなりました。

一気に引き込まれました。

この「800」は僕が初めてかった文庫本です。この本がきっかけで本を読むように

なりました。

主人公２人の視点で交互に描かれるこの世界は、とてもキラキラしていて

熱くて、魅力的で…

いつしか、800メートルのランナーである主人公たちのそばに自分もいるような

気になりました。

本を開いている間だけ、読者も登場人物になれるんだと思います。

読み終えた後の爽快感はいまでも忘れません。

川島誠さんの本は、その後もすべて買って手元にありますが、

その中でも僕は800が最高だと思います。

この作品が書かれた90年代初め、僕も高校生だったけど、性に関してこんなに奔放な奴はなかなかいなかった。もうちょっとヤボな方が現実的かもしれないが、どっかのパラレルワールドのチュウコウセイの物語と思って読めば問題無い(ていうか読み進めていくうちに自分のいる世界では無い800ワールドにトリップしていた)

読み終わった後の爽快感は、夏休みの部活のあとのみかん水のようだ。

あれは夏の日、市内のある書店に、TOEIC受験後に自転車で立ち寄った時。
その書店自体に初めて入ったのだが、平積みにされていたこの小説をタイトルと、評者・江國香織の名が気になって手にとってみたが最後！！
一行目を読んで秒殺されたのだ！！本当に文句なしに面白く、切なく、怖いほど好きになってしまった作品。まったくべとつかない青春もの。

青春ものってどうも・・・・と敬遠しがちな人にピッタリの作品、そう思います。
