中学生の多感な時期のシュウジに次々と襲いかかる不幸。
読んでいて気持ちが悪くなるくらいの不幸にもシュウジは「ひとり」で受け止め、でも心の底では誰かと「ひとつ」になりたくて、あがく。
読み進みながら、何故に人はこんなにも残酷で、無慈悲で、そして無力なのだろうと悲しくなってしまう。
そして、衝撃のラストシーン。
しかし、最後にはシュウジが残した希望が、「ひとり」だった人たちを「ひとつ」にした。
同じく多感な時期を過した男性としてシュウジの気持ちにとても共感でき、
そしていつか多感な時期を迎えるであろう息子を持つ親として現代の中学生の悩みや苦しみを十二分に理解できた。
重松氏の著書のなかでも最高傑作と言えると思う。
読んでいる途中は本当に読むのが辛くなるくらい切なく苦しい物語だが、読破後は心に光が射すがごとく幸福感が得られる。

「穴ぼこのような目」になってしまったシュウジに残っているのは
不思議な縁でつながれたヤクザの情婦「アカネ」と元クラスメートの
「エリ」だけだった。
故郷を捨てたシュウジはアカネを訪ねて行くが、ダンナであるヤクザに
アカネとの関係を見破られ、追い詰められて事件を起こしてしまう。
逃亡したシュウジはエリに会いに行くが、エリもまた心に闇を抱えていた。
結果的にシュウジはエリを救ったが、過酷な運命を疾走し続けたシュウジの
ゴールは、あまりにも哀しいものだった。

巻頭から一貫してシュウジのことを「おまえは……」と語っているのは
誰なのか確信が持てなかったが、ラストで納得した。

中３の息子に読ませようか、刺激が強すぎるか真剣に迷っている。

A Kid's Review
凄まじい孤独、読んでいて痛みさえ感じました。
物語が進むにつれて、追い詰められ文字通り疾走しながら暗闇に落ちて行く少年。その彼が最後に、何に代えても守りたかったものは、彼の前を走る希望だったのではないでしょうか。
