壮大なファンタジーです。
歴史、ミステリーも絡んでますが、
この二つの要素は中途半端です。

語り口調がユーモラスで、語彙を駆使してます。
表現がいちいち大仰で、雄大です。
古川日出男さんの経歴読んだら、劇の台本書かれて
いたということで納得しました。
印象に残ってる言葉が
「その書は惑乱が拾い、錯乱が買い入れ、癲乱
　が陳列したのです」
「書物はそれ自身の意思で出会うべき人物の
　所へ現れる」

言葉遊び嫌いな人には、しんどいかもしれません。
ファンタジー、童話好きの人にお勧めです。
シニカルな大人の童話です。

満足するかどうかは、この物語をアラビアンナイトに連なる読み物だと思えるかどうか...
深く考えずに、ただただ、その時々の異国の世界を想像して読んでみると、この虚実入り混じった文章をたっぷりと楽しむことができると思われる。

読了後に現実に戻れば、男は結局は単純な生き物だと実感させられるのは、この作者の作品らしい。
最後になにやら勝つというか操っていたのは女...
そんな風に読み終えたのは私だけ？（笑）

これまで読んだ同じ作者の作品では、妙な軽さがある現代コトバの一人語りに食傷気味だった。
しかし、歴史モノということもあり、少しそのあたりは抑え気味。
たまに意外なところに出てくるが、適度に緊張感が抜けて良い♪

ちなみに、長さに対してのコメントもあるかと思うが、本家本元のアラビアンナイト（東洋文庫）の、あの冗長さと比べれば、短い短い（笑）
最近の角川文庫のセオリー(?)通りの三分冊だったが、上巻としてはちょうど良い部分で終わった気がする。
分冊を見据えて書いたか？？と思うくらい（笑）

そして、フレデリック（レイトン）卿が描く清麗な女性たちが表紙となっており、3冊分も楽しめるのは嬉しい♪

文庫で３分冊、１０００ページ超と聞くとビビルかもしれないけど心配無用、一気に読めます。（私はビビッて先ずは一冊だけ買ったが、直ぐ二冊目三冊目を買いに走るハメに）
ただし必ず夜読むこと。
浮世の悩みとかはいったん忘れて、ブランデー片手に読めばあ〜ら不思議、幻想的な語彙の渦に巻き込まれて、貴方はいつの間にかアラビアの夜。
あと、寝不足に注意。
ナポレオン侵攻時代の話の方が尻切れの感あり、その分★ひとつ減。
