　書き出しは間違いなく秀逸である。序盤、響一の子供時代の話は濃密な描写とあいまって非常に引き込まれて読み応え抜群。
　だが、舞台が途中ザイールにうつり、ジャングルの生活の中に突入するにあたり、その文章があだになる。長くて飽きる。
　この小説はいわゆる世界の認識の仕方に「神」というモチーフを絡めた話。つまり、色盲の人間が見ている世界と、普通の眼を持った人間が見る世界は同じなのだろうか？　色盲の人間の眼を通せば、そこに普通は見えないものが見えるのではないだろうか？　という哲学的内容を内にこめた力作なのである。
　残念なことに二章構成であり、二章目から物語りはあらぬ方向に転がりだし、首を捻るばかりであった。最後のオチ（のようなもの）は何となくわかるし、唸りもしたが、それにしてもまったく盛り上がりに欠けたまま物語りを占めるのは、小説として欠点なのではないだろうか。

「一九六八年に東京の北多摩に生まれた橋本響一は、二十六歳の時に神を映像に収めることに成功した」ショッキングな一文ではじまり、色覚異常の天才・響一の成長をたどる物語は、彼が求めるままに舞台をザイールに移す。旧石器時代的な狩猟生活を送る森の民、幼少時に白人の傭兵から聖書を口伝され成長してからは聖母とされる少女。強烈な人物が後を断たないが、響一の森での体験はそれを上回る衝撃に満ちている。森に渦巻く色のなかに彼は神を見、神を視覚化した。しかし第２部では舞台が唐突にハリウッドへと移る。気鋭の映画監督、聡明な女優、孤高のミュージシャンらが洒脱でシニカルな会話を交わし、土俗的なにおいから遠く隔っても、次のページにはきっと神秘的な何かが待っているという緊張感を孕む。そして、一部に劣らず荒唐無稽だ。だが、行間を読むことを許さないほど詰めこまれたディテールに圧倒され、気づけば私たちも奇跡の現場へと流されているのである。

小説に「眼福」ってほめ方が正しいかどうかわかりませんが、過剰な視覚情報に溺れる快感には、この表現しか思いつきません。
クライヴ・バーカーがお好きなら是非。多少毛色は異なっていますが、文字よりもイメージが頭に残るという点で同じ血が流れています。
文章がちょっとがんばりすぎちゃってるのはご愛敬。
