"銃社会を糾弾する啓蒙映画として観るのなら、「ボウリング・フォー・コロンバイン」は稀に見る傑作だ。論文としては優れている。でも（くりかえすけれど）一個のドキュメンタリー作品としては凡庸だ。イズムや主張に従属しているからだ。一定の目的を設定して、これに帰結することを撮影や編集が自己目的化するのならば、それは一昔前のプロパガンダ映画であり、動員や視聴率を最大の優先順位に置く商業作品だ。"

・・・本書の冒頭、この部分を読んでギョっとしました。ドキュメンタリーはきわめて（作り手側にとって）自己本位的であって身勝手なものではあるけれど、ナレーションべたべたのプロパガンダじゃあない。

「Ａ」「Ａ２」を撮る過程の「気づき」も含め、著者のキャリアを通しての、煩悶・苦悶が赤裸々に語られますが、それもこれもドキュメンタリーを愛すればこそ。個人的には「Ａ」「Ａ２」のＤＶＤを観るまえに本書を読んでいた方がより楽しめるような気がしました。

ドキュメンタリーと言うよりもメディアそのものの在り方を読みながら自問させられました。傑作と思います。

ドキュメンタリーという観点から見るならば著者のいうように
ムーアの作品は凡庸かもしれません。ただ面白さというところで
言えばムーアの足元にも著者はまだ及んでいないのでは・・
だってまだ少ししか作品を作っていませんし、現在はエッセイスト
として活動しているのですから。イズムからの脱却という
史上誰もなしえなかった点から評価するのは無理がありますね・・

ドキュメンタリーが捉える現実は結局のところ虚構である、というのが著者の主張です。これにはある程度同意できますが、この主張をするために映画を引きあいに出して、映画もドキュメンタリーも実際に存在する風景や人を映したものであるし、どちらも台本があるし、どちらも状況を選ぶ作業をしているから、ドキュメンタリーは虚構であるという論理展開等は、正直屁理屈に感じました。用いる例えにしても下手なものが多く、なんであえて例えているのか良く分からない部分が多々ありました。きわめつけは、出す必要の無い固有名詞があまりにも多すぎて、語っている内容がピンとこないことです。要所要所に必要な固有名詞を出すのは構わないのですが、全く出す必要の無いところに映画の名前や制作者の名前が登場してくると、読んでいて不愉快に感じます。著者に内容を伝える意志があるのかどうか疑問な本でした。
