『巷説百物語』シリーズ第三弾。
今作は、『続巷説百物語』から四十年以上経った明治が舞台。

個人的には又市の仕掛けもストーリーの面白さも前作『続巷説百物語』は完璧だと思っているので、舞台が変わるということもあり、読む前から少々心配だったのだが、やはり一つ一つの話の出来は前作の方が上で、読んでいる途中に考えることは前作の方が面白かったなあということだけだった。

が、ラストまで読むとその印象は一変。
斬新というわけでもなんでもないが、このシリーズは第一作の『巷説百物語』から始まって、今作までで一つの作品なのではないかと思うような、そんなラスト。
まだこの先『前巷説〜』や、最近連載が始まったばかりの『西巷説〜』があるが、時系列の関係からいっても、山岡百介の関わりからいっても、この三作品がひとまとまりなんだと思う。

最後の最後でガッカリさせられるものが多い中で、久しぶりにラストが気に入った作品。

叉市たちの活躍は、隠居となった百介の回顧譚なので、淡々と語られるのみとなり、前作までの現場での生々しさ、シャープさが見られないのはちょっと寂しい。
しかし、叉市やおぎんの消息を感じられる場面は、百介の視点で懐かしく、うれしく思う。
また京極堂シリーズにつながる人物や、キーワードが発見できます。
読後、百物語シリーズや京極堂シリーズを読み返したくなります。

中善寺の妖怪シリ−ズと双璧をなす作品。
数々の仕掛けを時代を超えて語り、事件を解決に導くと言う前作までとは異なった設定のため、飽きずに読破できます。

数々の仕掛けを語りつくした百介が役割を果たしたように旅立つ姿に涙。
