前作に「巷説百物語」があります。絶対にそちらから読むべきでしょう。順番を間違えると趣が激減します。

前作を受けての作品ですが、どんどん仕掛けが大掛りになってきます。仕掛け側の登場人物の来歴が事件に絡み始め、個人的な行きがかりを清算するための仕掛けが始まって行きます。前作ほど軽く読めません。重いです。
読者が感情移入するはずの百介も、同様に覚悟を求められるからでしょうか。生半可な覚悟で後ろ暗い世界にかかわってはいけないと。
ただ、百介の覚悟とは無関係に又市たちは又市たちで別のレベルで覚悟を決めて、仕掛けを進めていきます。「勝負」「善悪」とは異なる軸で事件が終わるので、爽快感がありません。とても大きな喪失感が読後にやってきました。
ぽつんとひとり「どうしたらいいんだよ？」という状態で取り残された感じでしょうか。一作目は軽く面白く読み始めたのに...。「どうしてくれる！！」百介もそんな気分になったんだろうなと思ってしまいます。「最初は面白くてかかわったし、役にも立ったじゃないか！！これから先心にあいた穴をどうしてくれる！！」と。

ここまで感情移入させて読ませるなんて、やっぱり京極氏の豪腕としか言いようがありません。
このシリーズの中では、読み物としての面白さは一番です。
ただ、一作目に感じた爽快感でとめておきたいなら、本作には進まない方が良いでしょう。喪失感、飢餓感が植えつけられてしまいますし、続編「後巷説百物語」でもこの喪失感は癒されないのですから。

　作家志望で怪談が大好きな山岡百介と、小股潜りの異名を持つ仕事師、又市らが織り成す人気の「巷説」シリーズ２作目。

　悪党なのにどこか憎めない又市が、受けた難題を解決します。全編にどこか悲しい感じが漂っていて、読後感がよかったです。オススメ。

表立っては解決できない闇に紛れた事件を、あたかも妖怪の仕業のように見せかけて解決する小悪党又市一味の活躍を描いた第２作目です。彼らの入念で奇抜な仕掛けに毎話ワクワクしながらあっという間に読むことが出来ました。
決して正義の味方を気取るわけでもなく悪と戦う彼らの姿が最高にカッコいいです。
登場人物たちの性格をよく反映した話し口調がとても読みやすく、この物語全般に漂う独特な雰囲気にすっかりハマってしまいました。続編の後巷説百物語もおすすめです。
