本作ではワタルが現世から旅立った後の幻界での冒険が描かれています。
映画では詳しく描かれなかったワタルとその仲間との友情、
幻界の世界観、幻界と現世の関係が深く掘り下げてあり、
且つ、「ハルネラ」・南と北・種族間差別・真実の鏡など
映画には登場しなかった要素が書き込まれているため、
ワタルの行動の背景・理由が納得できました。
映画よりもシリアス度も高く、ファンタジー的な要素にアレルギーさえなければ、
大人が呼んでも十分に手応えのある作品だと思います。

個人的には本作を呼んだおかげで、映画では人の良い妖怪くらいにしか
印象の無かったキ・キーマがすごく好きになりました。いいやつだ〜。

宮部さん自身RPGの攻略本収集がご趣味ということで、幻界の世界観はすばらしく、素直に入り込めました。細かすぎる設定もありましたが、RPGをプレイした事がない方、ファンタジー初心者でも楽しめると思います。しかし、RPGが心底好きな方や、『ロードオブザリング』のようなファンタジーじゃないものは邪道!と言う方、年令の若い方には受け入れられないかも知れません。。

主人公は11歳の子供だからといって侮るなかれっ!さすが宮部さん!大人が読んでも充分に考えさせられる内容です。現在の家庭の在り方、人種差別、また世の中に対しての理不尽に対しての憤りなど・・・。色々自分を見つめ直した本でした。全部が見所なんですが特に、この中巻では最後の方のバクサン博士が亘に対して言った「あなたの心のなかにもこの幻界にある理不尽が存在するんだ。幻界の有り様はただそれを映しているだけなのだ」という言葉です。改めて「人間」という存在について気付かされ、また自分自身を見なおすきっかけになりました。亘もそうじゃないかと思います。個人的には映画より先に本を読んでほしいと思います。
