仕事を始めたばっかりの頃は、右も左も分からなくて、とりあえず付いていくこと必死だったりする。振り落とされないように、枠からはみ出さないように。でも、しばらくしてすこーしだけ周りが見え始めると、サボったり、遊んだり、怠けたりしてしまう。そんな時この本を読むと新入社員の頃の気持ちを思い出して、今の自分がいかにだめだめかを思い知らされたりする。ちょっと怠けたいな、仕事がやだなって思ったときのカンフル剤になる本です。でも、そこら辺の啓蒙本とはまったくちがう。単なる小説だからこそ、「鈴木みのり」に自分を投影して見えてくるものがある。

この本は、短大を卒業した大手出版社に就職し、受付係として仕事を始め、社会人となっていくまでの姿を描いたものだ。野心があるわけでもなく、不真面目でもない、普通の女の子である登場人物たちが、出版社という野心家（「本」に対する熱い思いを持った人々）の集まりである大手出版社の「雑用」を担っているようすを非常に詳しく描いている。
とりたてて出世してやろうという野心もなく、仕事はすきだが、結婚したら多くは仕事をやめ（やめざるをえないのも含め）、フェミではないが何でもかんでも従順なわけでもないという、いわゆる一般職とか、今では派遣で大企業に勤めているような、この手の女の子たちの仕事の実像は、その数が多い割には描かれていなかったように思う。女性労働の研究世界に関しても然りである。モノの感じ方、仕事の仕方、ライフスタイルやファッションなども含め、大変よく描かれていて、おもしろくよんだ。

随分経ってしまったので、こんな感じだったかなあと思いました。私が、思い出しているのは、ただみんな回りの人が何も教えてくれなくて、責めるときとか、怒るときだけは、先輩顔で、なんか嫌な感じだった。そんなことは書いていなくて、ただ単調に時が流れていってでもその単調な仕事が単調でもやり続けていくのが仕事なんのだなあというのが結論で。最後のあとがきで４人しかいなかった同期の一人があの白石一文だったんだと妙に感心してしまいました。
