怖い。何が怖いって、異界の世界のものが怖いのではない。
生きている人間が怖いのだ。
怪物や姿形の無いものに恐れおののくホラーを期待している方にとっては、
これはある意味期待はずれかも知れない。
だけれど、殺しても殺しても這い上がってくる化け物を描写される以上の
恐怖を感じるのだ。

と同時に、人間の業の深さに何だか泣きたくなってしまった。

最近聞く事の少なくなった「方言」その方言で昔話を語るかのように恐い話を続ける遊女。淡々と話を続ける遊女。その遊女の口を借りて「何者」かが話をしている･･･そんな不思議な雰囲気のなかで繰り広げられる話。読んでいて「恐い」というよりも「悲しい」話が続きますが一転して恐い話に変わります。最後の遊女の一言に思わず鳥肌が立ちました。

私は生まれてから２４才まで岡山の寒村で過ごしました。実家は今も岡山です。岡山の昔の遊郭のあった場所も知っています。…最初におさめられた、タイトルと同一の「ぼっけえ、きょうてえ」は、遊廓を舞台とした実話のようで怖い物語です。著者が、「もう岡山には戻れん」というのも分かります。
