前世の記憶をもつ、15歳の中学生・晃士。

「前世、ぼくは黒人でした。
チャーリー、それがぼくの名前でした。
ある雨の晩にバロン・サムディがやってきて、ぼくはおなかをえぐられて、そうしてぼくは死にました・・・・・・。」

おとぎ話のような彼の記憶はいったい何なのか？
夢？思い込み？幼少時に見たテレビ？
しかし、惨殺された義母の傍らに、バロン・サムディの悪魔の紋章が残される。
前世の記憶が現世によみがえった!?どうして？いったい何が起こっているのか？


謎はおもしろく興味をひかれるが、いかんせんすぐに予想がついてしまう。
なのに、主人公は見当違いの推理を展開し、解決へと遠回りしてしまうので、とてもまどろっこしい。

「謎解き」メインで引っぱらなくても、人物の魅力やエピソードのおもしろさなどによって充分読ませる小説になったと思う。残念。
読ませてない、とは言わないけれど、歌野作品にしては、今ひとつ食い足りなかった。

前世の記憶を持つ１５歳の少年。
前世では黒人である雨の晩にバロン・サムデイがやってきて、お腹をえぐられて死んだという記憶を持つ。
義母と喧嘩をした数時間後に義母が惨殺される。
その傍らには自分しか知りえない前世で殺されたときに書き記された謎の紋章が残されていた。
前世のバロン・サムデイが現世に復活したのか。

現世と前世を繋ぐものは・・・　
僅か１１歳の天才少年が謎を解き明かします。
前世の謎解きは読んでいくうちになんとなくわかってきます。
でも最後まで面白く読ませる文章はすごい！
歌野晶午もハズレはありません。
上手いです。

　先にベストセラーとなった『葉桜の季節に君を想うということ』を読み、『このミステリーがすごい!〈2004年版〉』に、歌野晶午本人の、本書と『世界の終わり、あるいは始まり』と『葉桜の……』とで三部作になる、という発言があったので、読んでみた。
　主人公は、奇妙な前世の記憶を持つ、中学生。中学生にしては、大人っぽいな、と思っていたら、後半になって、それ以上に大人っぽい、天才小学生の探偵役が、現れた。
　子どもが活躍する小説はちょっと、苦手なのだが、でもそれほどは気にならなかった。『名探偵コナン』で、鍛えられてしまったか？
　ミステリーとしては、それほど悪くはないと思うのだが、中盤でヒントが多過ぎて、主人公より先に、真相がわかってしまうのが、難点。
　主人公が、何度か間違った推理をする。読者もそれに釣られて騙され、探偵役の謎解きによって、おお、なるほど！　となるのが気持ちいいと思うのだが、読者の方が先に真相がわかってしまうので、主人公の誤推理が、わざとらしく感じられて、そうじゃないだろ、と、突っ込みたくなってしまった。
　まあ、たまたま当たってしまっただけかも知れませんが……。
