北森さんのデビュー長編と、その元になった短編の収められた一冊。

北森さんには、美貌の民俗学者の蓮丈那智や、
骨董商（旗師）の冬狐堂の活躍するシリーズがありますが、
この作品にも、その萌芽のようなものが感じられ、
ファンの人なら、楽しめる一冊になってると思います。

が、後書きにも、書かれていますが、文章や、構成に、

若さというか、甘さがあるため、作品を単独でみると、
あまり高い評価は出来ない、というのが、正直なとこです。

　1995年に東京創元社から出た単行本に、未発表短篇「狂斎幽霊画考」を加えて文庫化したもの。
　舞台は明治３年の守田座。病気で足を切断した名女形・澤村田之助の復帰公演にからみ、殺人やら放火やらが起こるというもの。『廿四孝』と河鍋狂斎の幽霊画がライトモチーフとなり、芸能誌・美術史好きにはたまらない一冊となっている。
　澤村田之助、河鍋狂斎をはじめとして、河竹黙阿弥、仮名垣魯文、九代目市川団十郎など実在の人物の多数が登場する点も読みどころ。歌舞伎が江戸風から近代的なものへと変革する時期でもあり、興味が尽きない。
　ミステリとしては、いまいちだろう。プロットはまあまあ良く出来ているが、トリックは予想できてしまうし、牽強付会な気もする。また、そもそも北森氏は長篇を書く力に欠けていると思う。本書は処女長篇だから仕方ない面もあるが、のちの作品を見ても…。ストーリーがスッキリしないし、長篇を支えるだけの「謎」が十分でない。
　「狂斎幽霊画考」は、『狂乱廿四孝』の原型となったもの。かならず、あとから読むべし。こちらのがスッキリとまとまりが良いような気も…。
