２０年以上も教師をやってきて、時には深夜に至るまで教え子の相談に付き合ったりもした。作中の熱心な先生のような気持を持ったつもりでいた。しかし本当には人生がわかっていなかった。自分の子供がハンディを持ち、世の中を生きていくことの重さがわかってから、灰谷さんの優しさの意味がだんだんわかってきた。
　若い教師の頃は、灰谷さんの本を読んで勝手な批判をしたりした。でも、苦しみを本当に知った人の文章の価値は、苦しみを知ってからでないとわからない。今は灰谷さんの文章に大いに励まされて生きている。

2006年11月に逝去された、故灰谷健次郎氏の文壇デビュー作。
1997年の神戸連続児童殺傷事件の報道姿勢に対して新潮社からの版権引き上げなど、政治的な立ち位置は賛否両論あろうが、本作について言えば、日本における児童文学の金字塔であると断言できる。

なにより私自身が小学校4年生で本作に触れて以来、30年余何度読み返したかわからないが、そのたびに心が洗われる。もうほぼ一言一句を覚えており、ここで来るというのはわかっていても涙がにじんでくる。

私に学校の先生になることをあきらめさせた作品であり、大きく人生が変わった。とても子供に対してここまで向き合えないなとあきらめた覚えがある。

ここまで良い人ばかりいないし、先生も良い先生、悪い先生があまりにステロタイプな区分になっている。そのような点は批判の対象になりえるだろうが30年読み続けて今まだ色あせない。これは本物だと感じても、間違いではないと思う

この作品にはたくさんの子供とたくさんの大人が出てきます。
それぞれの人間にそれぞれの人生と感情と悩み喜びがあります。
大人、子供に関係なくです。
この作品に出てくる先生達は自分達のやり方で
泣いたり笑ったりしながら、一つの「個」として
読者の代わりに子供と向き合ってくれます。
はじめは自閉症と診断された甥っ子と

鉄三を重ね合わせて読んでいましたが
繰り返し読むうちに、いつしか自分が鉄三になり、小谷先生になり
読む度違う場面で、違う感動を与えられるようになりました。
何度読んでも皆が前を向いて進んでいるところに
自分も背中を押されるような、そんなすがすがしい勇気を与えてくれる一冊です。
