トートという架空の人物（？）を登場させることによって、
皇妃エリザベートの人生が美しいドラマとして
よみがえった。という感じがします。
史実とされているものとは多少違いがありますが、
ミュージカルの舞台で演じられるのが目に浮かぶような
気がしました。
悲劇の色があちらこちらに見受けられる彼女の人生が、

非劇ではなく幸福に満ちたものだったような
快い印象を受けました。

セリフも少なく年代や説明の多い歴史小説かなと思ったのですが、
全くの逆で、肩の凝らない舞台小説で、さくさく読めます。

私も舞台を初めて観たとき、トートとエリザベートの恋愛関係が
イマイチ理解が出来なかったのですが、小説の中で背後関係とか、
劇では表現できない心の内なるセリフ（特にトートダンサーの心の内などは
舞台では全く無視されているので興味深い）を読む事によって、
そうだったのか！と納得する事が出来ました。
それもそのはず、舞台を手がけた小池　修一郎氏が訳してるのですものね・・・

観てから読むと、セリフが全てメロディーに乗って読めるので、楽しいし、
読んでから観れば、小説の中の登場人物が実体となって動き歌う姿を観れるので、楽しいと思います。
勿論、舞台を観る予定のない人にも、娯楽小説として、楽しく読めますよ！

小説としての本書は、宝塚歌劇の演出家　小池修一郎氏によるもので、
華やかな舞台が　どのように二次元に描かれているか大変興味を持ちました。
危惧の一分の隙もなく、使われている語彙が著す美しい響き、
漢字から受ける重厚なイメージが深く広く膨らみ、
舞台を観たことがない方でも三次元の世界へ入りこめます。

また「あとがき」にある、
『各民族　少なくともハンガリーとの共存共栄を目指した皇后は
生前理解されなかったが、百年後見事にその役割を果たしていると言える』という件は　
史実としての重さと、　今　舞台により蘇り、
日本でも　別な意味での”命”が息づいていることを感じさせ、影響力の大きさに感嘆します。

ちなみに宝塚版はオリジナリティをだす為、
ウィーンスタッフと相談の上 男役＝トートが主役になるよう物語展開を微調整し、
彼中心のテーマ曲「愛と死の輪舞」を新曲として追加した。
好評を得た為、後のハンガリーでの上演は なんと宝塚版だったそう。
