こんなにも面白いと思った本に出会ったのは久しぶりだった。
個性的で様々な国籍の登場人物が厳しい世界と戦う姿は、
例えそれが犯罪であろうと誰だって愛しくなるはず。

架空の世界、円都市。今にも生まれてくるかもしれない。
いや、むしろもう存在しているのかもしれない。
そんなリアルな雰囲気が伝わってきます。

どこまでも切なく、どこまでも優しく進んでいく物語は
現代の日本社会を考えさせられる。
そして岩井監督ならではの生と死の表し方はやはりどこか切ないです。

アゲハもグリコもリンも皆、愛しくってたまらない。
是非、読んでみてください。

同書の映画版を見た方も多いと思うが、小説は映画よりも華々しくはないが非常にシビアな現実をジワジワと僕たちに突きつけてくる。「イェンタウン」という町や人は実在しないが、似たような状態の町や人達を僕たちは知っている。日本という国の持つ危うさや、日本人の持つ偏見・差別などが、極端なかたちではあるが、うまく表現されている。あと、軽妙なタッチで書かれているので、すぐに読めてしまうのも良いところだ。ストーリーを楽しみながら、日本社会の問題を考えるきっかけになる小説だと思う。

今でこそ日本の俳優たちとアジアの俳優たちは
世界中（時に架空世界を）を舞台にした映画で
何の違和感もなくひとつのフレームに収まっている。

しかし10年前、このような異国趣味を超えた
アジアンテイストな作品がいくつあったのかと問われれば
ほとんどその数は上がってこないのではあるまいか。

本作が発表されて10年、設定はやや陳腐化されたとは言うものの
イェンタウンという表象はそれなりのインパクトを持ちえるし
逆にそれだけ普遍化したということであろう。
そう云う意味でも岩井俊二の先見性は評価されるべきだ。
