　伝説は日本のどこにもあったはずである。何故、遠野が選ばれたのか。 岩手の奥の方は、今でも、違う時代を封入している感がある。明治であれば、江戸時代以前の名残があったであろう。それだけに、伝説が真実味を持って迫って来たことは想像に難くない。 当時の人の天衣無縫な発想を、柳田國男の簡潔にして鮮やかな筆致が伝えてくれる。 私は岩手の出身であるが、ひいき目ではないと思う。　　　拾遺の中に、三光楼という遊郭に通った男の屋号が三光楼になった、という話がある。普通では考えられないことである。しかし、遠野市出身のあでやかなる女性、三光楼さんは私の憧れの人であった。遠野にも、この珍しい苗字の家は2、3軒しかないということであったが、実在するのである。三光楼さんが言った。「六角牛山に3回雪が降ると遠野の町にも雪が降る」と。通し番号299話までのこの本の、第300話として書き込まれている。

　1909年（明治42年）から1910年にかけて、当時30代半ばの柳田国男氏が、奥州は遠野の人・佐々木鏡石氏（当時24〜25歳）から聞いた土地の人たちの話を採集、筆記した民間伝承譚「遠野物語」。全部で119の短い言い伝えの背後に、深い山や黒い森の景色が見えるような気がした。谷川の清流のさらさらいう音や、凄い風のごおーっと唸る音が聞こえてくる気がした。
神隠しに遭った女の話や山奥の不思議な家「マヨヒガ」の話などあるなかで、格別印象に残ったのは次のふたつの話。
　嫁と姑との仲が悪い家で気が変になった男の話（第11番）。「ガガはとても生かしてはおかれぬ、今日はきつと殺すべし」と言って、草刈り鎌をごしごしと磨ぎ始めるあたりからの成り行きにぞくぞくさせられた。
　もうひとつは、第95番目に置かれた不思議な「石」の話。形の面白い岩などを持って帰るのを趣味にしている庭作りの得意な男（43〜44歳）が、山で遊んでいるうちに美しい大岩を見つけたところが････。
　ほかにも、津波で死んだ妻に遭った男の話や、ヤマハハが娘を喰らいて皮を剥ぎ、その皮をかぶって娘になりすます話などなど、昔話のエッセンスともいうべき怪異譚やら奇譚やらがいっぱい。

　柳田国男が３５歳のとき（明治４３年、１９１０年）に発表した衝撃作。もっとも、発表当時は、あまりに内容が異色だったため、世の中からほとんど無視されたらしい。
　すなわち、内容は、平地に住む人（平地人）のことではなく、山に住む人（山神山人）のことに終始する。しかし、柳田氏は、これを「目前の出来事」だ、という。そして、「現在の事実」なのだから、それだけで立派な存在理由がある、と。
　さらに、「目前の出来事」「現在の事実」にもかかわらず、人の耳に経ることは多くなく、人の口と筆とを倩う（やとう）ことがはなはだわずかだ。「目前の出来事」「現在の事実」を無視しようとするそれらの人々は、「外国に在る人々（献辞）」のようだ。そして、願わくは、それら「外国に在る人々」「平地人」を戦慄せしめよ、と（序文）。
　本書は、遠野物語の他、昭和１０年（１９３５年）に増補版本がだされたおりに追加された「遠野物語拾遺」を、あわせ収録する。
