フランス片田舎の豊かな自然と魅力的な人々と
触れ合って自分自身を見つめる､成長物語｡
と言ってしまうとなんだかすごくありきたりのようですが､
そこは「ショコラ」で
母から受け継いだ血と能力の呪縛に抗う女性の
切々とした気持ちのゆらぎを甘さとほろ苦さでまとめた､
ジョアン・ハリスの見事な言葉を紡ぐ力が
今作でも現れています｡

曇りのない心で人々と接していたつもりで､
実は作家であることの立場を口実に彼らを低く見ていた
彼自身の知られざる傲慢さに気づくくだりなどは
読んでいてハッとさせられます｡

また､ワインとフルーツの香りと共に押し寄せる追憶や
心を閉ざす女性の謎など
ミステリーとファンタジーの要素を絡めながら､
主人公が自分の本当の居場所として
自分だけの奇跡・魔法として最後に何を見出すのか､
素朴だけど沁み入るラストです｡
