　ふらりと田舎の村に現れた母娘は、そこでチョコレート店を開店。旧弊な村の人々は、初めは遠巻きにこの新参者を眺めているが、やがて彼女のチャーミングな魅力と、なによりおいしいチョコレートにそれぞれの人生の意味を見つけ出してゆく。
　多分、映画版はもっとスイートなラストが待っているのだろう。

　私は本書の最後の方のページを読んでいて悲しくてたまらなかった。誰か、ヒロインの心の傷を理解して、救われるだけじゃなくて救ってあげてよ。
　笑顔の裏には深い悲しみがある。それはまるで、甘くて苦い一杯のチョコレートのように複雑に…。

味も形もさまざまないろとりどりのショコラと共に、
人間模様や恋愛模様がつづられていきます。

疲れたときにチョコレートを食べたときの、なんだかほっと心がなごむ感覚。
そんなほっとしたあたたかい気持ちになれます。
チョコレートが食べたくなるだけじゃなくて、
読む人を幸せにしてしまう、とびきり美味なファンタジーです。

カバーの装丁からしておいしそうな「ショコラ」。
チョコレートにはこんなにもいろんな種類のものがあるのか。
こんな風に生活に取り入れるのか。
チョコレート好きなら、きっと、そんなことを思いながら読むに違いない。
この本を読むときは傍らにいつも「ホットチョコレート」を用意していた。
そうしなければ、落ち着いて読めないのだ。

決して古い話ではないのに、作品全体に漂うクラシカルな雰囲気。
なんとなく、ショコラカラーとでもいおうか、
そんな色彩の中で繰り広げられる人情味あふれるストーリーに、
いつの間にか惹きこまれてしまう。

自分が本当に望んでいることは何？
自分は本当に幸せなの？

そんなことを考えながら、登場人物たちの心の動きに目が離せない。
