一癖も二癖もある悪党どもが、不運の天才犯罪プロデューサー、ドート・マンダーの元に集結。
抱腹絶倒のドタバタ犯罪を繰り広げるシリーズ第１作。

とにかくキャラクターが個性的！
いつも「いい話があるんだ」とやってきては、チームをピンチに陥れる悪魔のような相棒。

母親ゆずりのカーキチで、排気ガスを吸ってエンジン音のレコードをいつも聞いているドライバーなどなど…。

狙う相手や場所も、国家権力、巨大銀行など、無謀度１００％。
破綻する計画、トチ狂う相棒。
そして、必ずあるどんでん返しとオチ。

面白くないわけがない！

ただ、犯罪ものはハードなものが好きという方、マンガチックは嫌という方にはお勧めしません。
そんな方は、同じ作者（リチャード・スターク名義ですが）の悪党パーカーシリーズをどうぞ。

1970年代に映画化されたもの（ロバート・レッドフォード主演）を見てから初めて読んで以来、何回読み直したことか。何度読んでも笑える永遠の傑作です。しかも恐ろしいことに、このシリーズいまだに続いていて、つい先月にも『バッド・ニュース』が刊行されました。息が長いのにもホドがあるが、読んでみるとやっぱり面白い。30年以上もクオリティが落ちないなんて、この著者はどうなっているのでしょう？　この第一作がベストなのは変わりませんが、シリーズどれから読んでもいいかもしれませんね。

泥棒ドートマンダーシリーズ第一作。
長編と言うより中篇連作な感じ？
メカを駆使した派手な面白い作戦もあるが、
ラストが地味でちょっとご都合主義に思う。
作者とユーモアのセンスが合う人には至高の作品だろう。
「空気売って下さい」と言うギャグには笑ったが、
あんまり大爆笑するギャグはありません。
ドタバタアクションで笑わせると言うよりは、
会話で笑わせるペーソスユーモアミステリーって感じ？
アニメ「親指トム」の機関車で精神病院に突っ込むシーンは、
アメリカ人には馬鹿受けだろうが、
今の日本人にはいまいちかも知れません。
「♪親指トームは、役に立つ男
　ちっちゃいってことは
　便利だね、あっ便利だね♪」
と歌えるおっさんは必読w
