本書で展開される論理的な謎解きは、かの名作「Ｙの悲劇」をも上回る究極の推理といってよい。ただしそれは、あくまでも本書をパズル小説として見た場合だが。

本書でレーンが指摘する数々の証拠は、まさしくこの人物しか犯人ではありえないということをことごとく論理的に証明するもので、その論理から指摘される犯人にもかなり驚かされる。
しかし、第２の殺人における犯人の行為（まだ生きている被害者を船から投げ落としたこと）は犯人の行動論理としてはまったくおかしなもので、ありえないといってよい。

私は殺人動機には重きを置かないが、犯人の行動論理は重視する。なぜならそれもまた謎解きの論理のひとつであるからだ。
犯人の行動が非論理的である以上、本書は完全に論理的とはいえず、その点で本書はやはり「Ｙ」に較べると落ちる。

　読んだ。面白かった。四十年ぶりの再読だった。
　ミステリーは読んでいるが、本格ものはずいぶん久しぶりだった。よく本格ものはパズルに譬えられるが、最近は、いまさら味もそっけもないパズルなんて、とどこかで感じていたような気がする。
　ドルリー・レーンの何と個性的なことか。引退した偉大なるシェイクスピア俳優。耳は聞こえなくなったが、驚異的な読唇術で、ハンディをほとんどカバーしている。シェイクスピアの台詞の飽くことなき引用や蘊蓄も、その設定のおかげで自然である。
　謎の設定や解明は、言うまでもなく申し分ない。今読んで改めて感じるのは、執筆時のアメリカの青年期ともいえる時期のダイナミズムである。あるいは、いかに小説中のこととはいえ、レーンが警察当局の代理人になるような行為を描いているのも驚きだった。
　これまで読んだことのない人には、本書は本格もののみならずより広い意味でのミステリーとしても極上のものであろう。だが、若い頃読んだ記憶がある、という人にこそ勧められる本でもある。自分の中にあるミステリーの基準が再確認され、新たな発見があるに違いない。

5.0 out of 5 stars 《レーン四部作》の第一作、20年ぶりの新訳, 2009/2/26
《バールストン・ギャンビット》と《ダイイング・メッセージ》という
クイーンにおける二大モチーフが、はじめて提出された作品。

読者にデータがフェアに提示され、それを起点に推理することにより、
ある事実を特定可能にするといったクイーン一流のロジックも健在で、
本作においては、第一の殺人における凶器を扱うための道具や第二の
殺人における死体の手術痕、そして第三の殺人における死体の上着の
内ポケットにあった列車の回数券などにその特徴を見ることができます。

なかでも、法廷において殺人の罪に問われた無実の被告を救うために
展開される彼の右手の傷をもとにした論理は明晰で、クイーンの本領を
存分に味わえます。

また、外国での因縁話という背景を持つ犯人は、いわゆる
《見えない人》で、当時としては衝撃的だったといえましょう。


《顔のない死体》トリックが偶然に頼っていたり、犯人が不自然な多重生活をしていることなど
に対し、現実的でないとツッコミを入れるのは可能でしょうが、ミステリにおける「論理」が所詮
レトリックに過ぎない以上、それを了解した上で、説得力ある解決を提示し得ているかどうかを
みていくべきだと私は思います。
